View Full Version : Damaged talon

My male H/H recently damaged his talon while hunting. It seems that he has ripped the outer shell off and this has left the soft nail under neath exposed. (see photo) It doesn't seem to bother him.
Has anyone else experienced similar? I am not flying him and pushed his weight up. He has been on antibiotics, and I have been bathing it every day.
Does anyone know if it will grow back, or should the whole talon/nail be removed (although I am not keen on an op, as he has already been under anaesthetic twice due to hunting accidents)
All advice appreciated
Thanks Steve

It should grow back fine.

Don't remove it, just wait to grow again and any infection problem take the bird to the vet.

Yes seen this many times and it looks OK to me and should start to grow back fairly quickly, we normally spray the area with antibiotic spray and free loft although you could still keep it on a Bow but don't hunt it for a few weeks give it time to harden off first. Unless there is another reason for the antibiotics then they are not really required unless it gets infected

hi stevie i had the same thing happen to me with my male harris,he ripped his talon in half it ****ed of blood so cleaned it up with antiseptic then put some suda cream on it and kept him bowed for a few days ,which was fine then i free lofted him and guess what he knocked it which ****ed of blood again, then i spoke to a mate who has kept every animal /bird you could think of he told me to dip it in sugar yes sugar which i did this clogged up the blood and he was kept on the bow perch for aweek and he was fine the sugar seemed to clot the blood so it could heal

Should grow fine but diff to see from photo. DO NOT under any circumstances use sugar, THE BEST media for bacteria to grow in!!!!

Flour is better to stem bleeding in an emergency. But get yourself... (oh boy I'm advertising again).. a "Westweald" first aid kit. Birds have about a thimble full of blood so blood loss is your bigest worry. Granules stop bleeding fast and help keep it clean. The Satavlex spray will keep infection at bay, but keep a careful eye on it. If the toe shows sign of heat or swelling dash for your nearest avian vet. the talon should grow back (photo is unclear) a split can be protected with a dab of glue, but if the talon sheath is off, then you have had it for the rest of the season. It may grow back an odd shape if the bed it grows down from is damaged. It should grow back by next season, but they dont grow very fast.

I've heard that one too, but as I am allergic to the stuff especialy the baby oil, and I have even had a horse that came up in a big red swelling from the stuff, I have been a bit wary of trying it.

Hi Stevie ... your no different from the rest of us ,,, plagued with the wars ,,of the flying season ... Its a good season without any knocks and bumps ,,, we could all do without them ,,, Whilst flying my FHH,, 2Years ago ... she ran out of distance when the quarry beat her to the drystone wall ,,, as she sat on it above where the rabbit entered it bolted through the other side . I saw her take on the chase but went out of sight ,,,, eventually found her ,,, with her quarry well subdued ,,, On picking her up ,,, I thought "Phu,,," shes made a right mess of this ,,, it was a blood bath,,, as she sat on my glove the blood was still streaming ,,, I was horrified to she had left her back talon on the wall .. ripped out well up into the knuckle ,, and really sore looking .... Like the vet told me ,,,"Dont underestimate nature ,, "", its amazing what grows back ,,, Keep her and her perches clean and she,ll be good as new in no time mate ,,,"Good luck mate",,,

My mates FHH has ripped all but 2 tallons exactly the same. The shell has come away leaving the soft inside.
Are you using any supliments Steve?

free loft until healed, watch for swelling at the base indicating infection, if so rush to your vet. A good quality diet may help.

This is getting interesting! My mate had no problems until he started using Raptor Essentials. I've used it years without a problem but havn't used it this season and my HH tallons are jet black and rock hard. My mates birds tallons are greyish and seem to be a bit spongy. May not be the supliments but I'd like to know how widespred the problem is and if there are any common feeding practises.

Hi ya hawka i had a female HH that i regulary gave a pinch of raptor essentials too on her food but in all honestly all it did for her was make her feet and legs real bright yellow along with her cere and come to think of it it did dull the colour of her talons of will see if i can find some piccys of her to confirm this, after all i think if you feed a balanced diet you shouldn't need to supplement food and me myself i like to give good reward from quarry when killed im not in it for half a dozen rabbits a day, just one after a good solid flight or flights and feed up at end of it thats all i ask of mine.
