After what happened to Ratz which could happen to anyone whether 1 year or 40 years experience i was thinking how many of you insure your birds?

i use exotic direct for both my birds........ always have and always will use insurance.
all vets bills are covered with an excess of about £25...good piece of mind for about the price of a packet of fags on each bird (cigarettes to out american friends :-) )

I've made 2 claims in 3 years; 1 was a mouth infection with the HH, total cost was about £80....no quibble, cheque came within a week of sending in the claim, and the last claim was when the Perlin died; got the cheque with in 3 days. I can't fault them.
i dont, insurance prices are a joke, and i bet its hard to get the companies to pay out. anyway, if my bird did die for some reason, im sure money wont come into it, it will be all the time and training that will be lost.

same as sean they are a rip off,i would never consider it, put all the money you pay them in a bank and i bet its less than they had to pay the vet plus your excess...

Sean and Barney....................If your birds break a leg with ligament damage but the Vet says it can be fixed but we are looking at £1200 would you pay?
My mate had respitary problems cost him £1500 after that he got insurance.
If your Harris (and this has happened) flies across a main road causing a car to swerve and have an accident do you know much about Public liability.....Are you Rich?
If that terrier that done my bird and had it happened to your precious bird that you have trained and cared for would you have it put down?
And all for £40 a year (my Insurance).......Expensive ....Jesus! that's one night out at the local curry house with the lads:rolleyes:
Where you Scrouge at the Xmas Panto this Year ?
Or Dopey in the Seven Dwarfs?
Still, its your choice .
Good luck to you . I paid a Heavy Heavy price by not having insurance in my Private life. Its a Shitter but if it happens God you are glad you had it........In this case i did not hesitate having the bird on the Wednesday and insuring on the tuesday and braking the leg on Friday is that not proof enough for you guys and this was no training cock up it could of happened to you!
I hope it does not.
Kind Regards.

i am insured...but got the paper work to do and took me ages to get round to it....in the mean time my male harris hawk got electrocuted and had to be put to sleep. Lesson learned the hard way...I would not have been able to save the hawk, but would have saved quite a bit of cash.

It isn't so much the cost of buying a replacement bird, say £350 for a Harris, unless you have a real expensive one. It is the Vets bills that get you. My friends just payed out over £750 for her FHH (the only bird she hasn't got insured) and there are more Vets bills on the way for it. May be you could argue it isn't worth spending that much in Vets bills for a bird she payed £300 for 5 years ago, but it is a brilliant hunter and 5 years manning, training, flying and getting attached .. how can you price that???
Wouldn't be without insurance!! Hunting accidents etc. happen - and vets are expensive. A good hunting partner can be nigh on irreplaceable, certainly without a load more time/money invested.
I use Golden Valley. Very competitive prices. Will also cover your weighroom/ equipment room and aviaries. I used to be with Exotic Direct - but DO read their small print. They will not cover for anything connected with reproduction - ie egg-binding etc!!

I think Public Liability and Vet fees are a must i really do and for those in the BOP commercial side then Theft as well Breakages etc.
You must be nuts to be without it.
Wightwings 'JUST' a Northerner? I must say you look more like a Southerner to me. Clean, Clean Shaven, Nice clean clothes and you have a Nice (polished car i might add) expensive Gucci Shoes and intelligent too and then you say something and the whole lot swirls down the gutter drain.
Mouth Shut...........Southern Softie.......FACT.;)

There seems to be some confusion here, there are 2 types of insurance .
1. 3rd party insurance through clubs, CA etc.
2. Vet insurance.
3rd party insurance is a must in case of accident out hawking causing injury to the public etc. It is compulsary on most club field meets.
Vet insurance is up to the falconer

i have or should i say had the third party insurance.as i have not renewd my membership at our hawking club.as didnt atend it in jan the begining of the new year.allso i think i should seriously start getting vet fees insurance.
hey minty, u askeddo we insure our birds, i dont, but i do have 3rd party, id take teh risk and pay the vet bills, if i ever needed to
Sean
I insure my HH for less than a pint of Guiness a week. Every one to their own, but I know I couldn't afford a decent vets bill without causing hardship to my 4 kids. So I will ere on the side of caution.
Bit different if you are single, no dependants etc.

My last saker split his beak, it had to be drilled and wired together.....cost £756.00, I paid £12.50 because he was insured. I wouldn't be without it.
£2500 vets bill cover, bird room and equipment cover AND I get paid if the bird ******s off while flying.......all for 4.50 a month.
How can that be a rip off?
:o didnt know insuirancer was that cheap, i remember people saying that it was liek 20 a month
Barn Owl

It costs me £9 a month for my three birds, each covered up to £5000 in vet fee's. Not a lot really
Kevin Massey
