well folks, ellie the lost harris has been found safe and well and a big fat 2lb 8oz.
i am a happy man.

http://www.falconryforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=9914

i went out with a male harris to the site to do some lure work in the hope that if still in the area she would see us and come over. i didnt hold out much hope as i thought that she would have been miles and miles away because of the gales we had been having. however, i saw nothing.
there was a lot of drissle and i was slowly getting soaked so decided to head off home having done what i came to do. i drove app' about a mile or two and was comming into a village (gartcosh), and saw what i thought was a crow on a lamp-post. i took no notice but as i passed under it i glimpsed some white on it. i hit the brakes and jumped out. it was ellie. i threw a dead rabbit to the ground and she was on it like the ellie i know and that was that. she was picked up, no fuss, no hassle. and she is now home. just one thing though. a wee wifey from the village had put out coocked ham slices to feed har and she had had a crop full. oh ****.
i called some more experience falconers and a vet to ask advise and was told to give her plenty of casting material in the form of wet rabbit fur to help with this problem.
(any further advise on this matter for future reference would be appreciated).

well. she is fed and watered and is doing ok. no injuries no forseeable problems.

she was found app' 1.5 - 2 miles (ATCF) away, up wind and the previous sighting on sunday appears to have been true as it wasnt far from here she was found. i dont understand why she wouldnt have come looking as there have been people all over the place swinging lures and whistling. she must have seen or heard them, however at 2lb 8oz she was perhaps a little stuffed to fly over. who knows., (greedy bitch).

now. i want to take this opportunity to thank a few people here. well a lot really. thanks to everyone who sent messages of support during the past week your comments and support was so much appreciated cheers.
thanks to the people at the IBR, and the guys at Dryburgh falconry centre, to brianm, stephen, andy rabbit, JB29, and a very special thanks to maxwell, who so selflessly gave up their free time (and some working hours i think) to help me look for a naughty harris which needs her **** kicked. thanks very much maxwell.(star).

last but not least, thanks to ellie for speeding up the balding and greying proccess and for the waking hours through the night. thanks ellie for instilling into me a rather long bad mood and temper ive not seen for ages. and of course for the aching gut which accompanies a lost bird. thanks ellie for the heartburn, heart ache, and depression which has lifted like a dark cloud on a bright day. thanks ellie, you bitch. (i love her really).

well, she is home and thats all that matters. thanks everyone, enjoy your hawking, best wishes, harrisii,

So pleased you have her back - I feel so relieved. You must have been singing all the way home!!!
Obviously she prefers cooked ham to DOC - she must have seen us drive past a few times. Probably sat there thinking "PMSL - who's that silly sod swinging a dead bunny on top of that hill!"
Words of thanks very much appreciated - just so pleased it's a happy ending...
Ahhhh!

thanks everyone. yeah its great to have a happy ending.
what she was eating i aint sure, (other than the cooked ham). a cast may give me a clue tomorrow.
she was flying at 2lb 2oz when lost, she was 2lb 8.5oz tonight when i got her home.
whatever it was it has put her weight right up, poss' voles, etc. anything.
possibly a squirrel in the woodland where i lost her. this wood is very small and i tracked her there with telemetry but when there i lost the signal. i thought at the time she was in some bramble or other cover but couldnt locate her.

the telemetry. i tried it right away and it was dead. i took out the batteries and tested them. one was fine, the other was dead. i replaced with new ones and it worked just fine. i reckon the batteries faded over the past week as they were checked before use and they appeared fine. must have been the tracking system for the trucks which effected my reciever. who knows.
thanks again everyone, your kind words are well recieved.
see, we can all get along. (sometimes). best wishes, harrisii.

harrisii. a lad i know flies for a living, tips etc, and he once told me when you use telem with high numbers(433 for example ) the signals you pick up arent always yours your better with the lower numbers( 173-216) just passing on some info cheers mate.

yip, your right. i was out the night she was lost when dark and i was picking up C/Bs, HGVs, sky tv, trackers, homehelp, intercoms. everything but the bird. this is why i lost her. i was following a signal for the tracking system from the haulage yard. thanks. its with this that people will form a better understanding of telemetry and what system is best etc.
best wishes, harrisii.

Will you be buying a different telemetry set ?

i was thinking of not using one.
i found her without the telemetry this time so whats the use???

Joke!!! yes. i have one.. i think i mentioned that the telem i was using was a back up system as i couldn't get the lukesander from my mate as he was at work.
yes i phoned the previous evening to arrange a pick up but forgetfull minds are not helpfull minds.

yes. telemetry will always be employed. a decent system which is reliable and i suggest to all to do the same. the back up system will now be used for finding my shoes.

thanks guys..

here is where ellie was found for those who are interested or curious.
she was last seen at the woodland strip to the west of "leckithill", along the edge of the M73. and was found east of johnston loch, in gartcosh. APP 2 KM from where she was lost. inchneuk is the farm where the sighting occured on sunday.
BOTH SITES MARKED WITH A RED AND YELLOW DOT.

Unbelievable - parked my car just by the P - next to red circle - whistling and swinging lure - looking over towards Inchneuk farm - not a thing. You were so lucky to spot her - think I'll go have my eyes tested tomorrow!

Harrisii

she landed in the tree to your right just as you stepped into the car. its always the way. she watched as you drove off and was eager to get that lure on the back seat. thats what she told me.
cheers maxwell.

I think you're right there - can't believe she didn't see me - or me her !!!
Ahh well - bet she saw me on top on Kilsyth aswell! - Everyone else did! lol
Know that area quite well now! Plenty of hare and a fair few peregrines to watch too - One poor bloke came back to see me to point one out - thought it might have been the ellusive hawk, did you know- Ellie's quite famous now! All the builders on the new housing estate - are looking out for her! They asked whether she came to you when you shouted her name! pmsl
"Yeh - of course she will mate"
How is she? Bet she's got her feet up - after her big adventure.
