Hi,hope everyone is having a good weekend? I am thinking about getting a common buzzard and was wondering if anyone breeds them or knows where I can get a good bird from? What time of the year are they ready and how much do they usually sell for?

A Buzzard wow...I posted on this forum last week for the first time thinking I had seen a Kestrel! Now I'm educated to the fact that it was indeed a BUZZARD!!! I happen to see these birds everyday when I walk my dogs and stand in awe of their grace....! I would love to own such a bird and wonder if they are infact a good bird to keep and fly and hunt with?
I am a Buzzard fan....What do you know about these birds as to their temprement and siutabillity with regards to Falconry?
Regards

a common buzzard is not such a good choice for hunting with (although you can do it), but a red tailed buzzard is a favorate of plently of people in here. theres no doubt that you can hunt with them! (and I think they look nicer then our common buzzard)

Hi birdman,I think Buzzards are nice looking birds,I don't think I'll be hunting mine;just want something to fly really and a buzzard is a good size for a begginner I think, although i have had a hh,i didn;t have him very long and when I worked at the zoo I was always with other people so I feel like I'm starting again and always have things to learn. I'll be getting a parent reared male when the right time comes!!! I have been getting advice from Paul (bfc007),we also live quite near so it will be good to have a helping hand! Thanks again Paul!!

Yes I have the pleasure of seeing them every day and only want to get closer I suppose ...But sometimes things are best left that way any seeing them in the wild also costs less in vet fees!

That is the bird!!!! Are they not pure grace? I trust the underside of the wings each have a large white stripe ? Is the body not speckled ? Do they not sail on the wind and stoop in a verticle drop?
What class!

i personally rekon the main diffrences between a redtail and common buzzard are foot size so it can takle larger prey and its overall attitude there much more agressive so tend to be more willing to hunt but the buzzards will hunt just arent so easy to enter

How much do Red Tails cost?
I think I would want to keep one of these if they were good flyers...But it's difficult to decide between all the great species out there

Birdman, if you want some nice pictures of a very beautiful red-tail - check Tasha and GregMik's posts! Awesome! Harlan's are the other colour morph of a RT I particularly like.

thats cool then yes definatly look at those pics but also read the (is a red tail a lazy bird compard to harris) thread it will tell you abit more and make sure your ready as if you want a lovley bird that is tame the red may or may turn out like this depends on how its trained and if its imprinted or not but the common buzzard will lways be a pleasure to handle
and consider wat you wanna hunt other than that if u still decide on a red that cool hope you do well

I'm truely fixated with Buzzards because I see them so often in the feild. Now I know there to be many types , I'm torn between the type I would choose to keep! Having said that I'll probably end up buyng a Peregrine seeing as they are Nature's finest acheivement:grin:
Oh but that Red Tail though:confused:

Birdman, all BOP are nature's finest achievement - in their own element! If you love the buzzard, keep a buzzard. Of course, it also depends on the land and quarry you've got and the style of hunting you want to do - flying a peregrine in the trees doesnt work very well, nor do they take to catching rabbits. I love the buzzards, particularly RT and Harris's, but I also love my falcons. Don't get a peregrine over your beloved buzzard just because it may appear to be a better hunter or others like it more. Go with whatever bird you love, and it'll show in the training and flying of your bird. It's a big descision, these birds live for a long time.

I hear you Mr Fawkes.....I hear you.
Can a buzzard hunt in trees ? What is it best siuted for? Is it a savage bird with game enough to stay at quarry? Is it fast ? Are there better birds?
It just seems like I want a CB because they are a native bird...Then I'm told that a RT is better [but it's not a native bird!]
So if I'm to give up the romance of having a bird that is native...for a bird that is foreign and superior...I might as well not even bother with a Buzzard! I'd be better going for a super falcon!
For what is the logic in flying an inferior bird? The only logic is the fact that I hold a romantic place in my heart for the native Buzzard! Else why have cotten when you can have silk?

This is a FORMAL APOLOGY to RIO116 ...For the theft of the afore mentioned falconers' thread!
Please accept my most humble apology . This is by no means a true reflection of my character ,and does not imply that I am the type of gentlemen who would steal a candle from a church ,or indeed rob a BOP nest of it's egg!

Its been said that its hard to get a Common / European Buzzard to hunt, but If so and you do then good, It means that you have learnt. In my opinion. But why people say about the HH and RT is that after seeing what a Buzzard does compared to a HH / RT then you will probably want one instead. so why bring another bird into the world of falconry that may just end up on the shelf after a few years.
I know where you are coming from though. But if you are going for silk does that mean you should go for the goldie then. their native.

I'm from Canada, so I don't know a lot about the CB, I only have experience with the RT. If you like the buzzard style (including RT Harris and CB) go with a buzzard. They are definately not "inferior" to falcons! They utilize a different hunting style - so if you decide you are going to get a non-native bird, there is no reason to choose a falcon over a buzzard other than quarry and landscape. A Red tail is a very determined bird, and great for hunting - check out some of the threads on here. They're also great birds to learn with. You can hunt them from trees, the fist, or waiting on, depends on the land and the quarry again. As for if there are "better" birds - it depends what you're looking for! No bird is intrinsically better than another - they all excell at what they do in the wild. What you want to do is pick a species that can hunt what you have available, and is willing to do so, and that you like! You wouldn't pick a tiercel peregrine for taking hares, just the same you wouldnt pick a Golden eagle for taking ducks. Then, if you didnt like the personality or the look of a goshawk, and the available prey was a mix of fur and game birds, you could get a Harris or a Saker falcon, and do just as well.
Mostly because I'm trying to convince you that buzzards are not inferior to falcons (or vice versa) here's some pics of RTs. They come in all sorts of colours. The buzzards are a great group! If you discard the CB because it is difficult to get hunting, but still like the buzzards - consider the RT. If you love the Buzzard, and put the effort in, theres no saying you couldnt do well with one, keep in mind what they hunt in the wild tho, this is typically what you'd be hunting them at.

BMoA,
You certainly are enthusiastic and this will get you a long way towards realising your falconry dream. Can I suggest that what would be really good for you (and you'll love it!) is to go on a good course at a reputable centre or meet and go out hawking with falconers in a club. Where abouts are you located? Maybe someone on this list near you would be kind enough to let you come over and see their bird/s?
This would really help you think about what bird you could be interested in taking on and exactly what it involves, both out in the field and at home. Reading it in books and discussing it over forums like this is all well and good, but to really understand what is involved there is nothing like exposure to the real thing.
I hope this helps,
Cheers,
Eddie

Hey EddieTV...I'm form London ! But I'm living in France. So it's difficult to visit Falc' clubs because I speak limited French!
Someone even told me that birds of prey were illegal to keep..But I later found out that he thought I was asking him if they were legal to HUNT....with firearms!
The fishing in France is world class because there is so much water[many rivers] all the fish are weighed in Kilos instead of Pounds...I had a Perch last summer that was 1 Kilo [caught on a spinner/shad lure].. Massive!
Thanks Rio for not evicting me!
