Hi All
Does anyone have (on the otherside of the pond) a copy of the "American Falconers club Journal" that contains the original H.J. Slijper's "Canon" on his Anglo Indian hood? Its a 1950's issue I believe......
I have the book "North American Falconry & Hunting Hawks" by Beebe & Webster (fantastic book BTW) that contains a version of this hood but I am told that its "innacurate" to the original .... i dont now why.
If by some good luck someone does have a copy of the journal ..... would you be kind enough to "scan" the article and send via my e-mail address please :)
This is a hood made from his pattern @ 47mm behind the eye and it IS the best fitting hood that Sabs has had on yet! I think @ 46mm it would be spot on.

Hi All
Just finishing a group of "Slijper" Hoods, the sewn hood sitting on the block with plain glued hoods below in various stages of completion. Each of the hoods weighs in at 10g or 3/8oz and the sizes shown are large Pere Tiercel or Male Gos or weight of 1lb 5oz.

Griff, what kind of leather are you using for the lining around the bottom? Just some thinner calf hide (maybe... 2oz? - trying to learn my leathers :P)? I like the look of this and am thinking about trying it on an anglo-indian hood instead of a throatlash.

No problem Griff, Just to add to Griffs previous comments the 'Slijper' hoods, this is the best fitting hood I’ve ever had (really) the hood clears the gape perfectly and the falcon is very comfortable wearing it extra room for the eyes also compaired to a dutch hood. Really nice hood and excellent service as usual many thanks. Mike

well I would like to thank Griff for putting up with me, my son Big Joe Joe (14) my granson thomas(2). He made us all really welcome I should imagine he is about now putting his house back together :o) The hood fitted the tiercel spot on and the finish superb. Its easy to see Griff as gone that extra yard to make sure all his hoods are made to a high stanard and reflect true quality. Now lad and lasses that are hopefully picking up Perlins up from me this season, and are struggling to find or get a hood to fit. Griff's is the chap, come to think of it for any other falcon or hawk that requies a hood Griffs the chap.

Griff, could you tell me what thickness of leather you use for the turks knot and rolled edge? Or is that a trade secret ;) ?
GriffMJ

Griff, could you tell me what thickness of leather you use for the turks knot and rolled edge? Or is that a trade secret ;) ?
Hi ...no secret just common sense .... you use the thickness of leather relative to the hood you are making :) So....if you are making an Eagle hood from 3-4oz leather...then the top knot would be made from 2-3oz ....being a slightly smaller guage of leather ....apply that principle and the top knot will always work for you :) But in the case of the Kestrel hood for example you have to use a manageable thickness for the purpose.

Hi Claire
I take it that its the first time she has been hooded then...lol I had a chuckle about what you said in your e-mail....reminisent of Saker-Clives Perlin when I first saw him in "other" hands.... he played dead for 30 mins next to his block.....then when he got fed up with it just poppped onto his block as though nothing had happened..
Claire
28-02-2006, 10:56 PM
its not the first time shes been hooded, but it was the first time I have hooded her. pretty sure she has only been hooded when already cast before, shes a pretty calm bird generally, last time I changed her equipment I did it without a hood. It was kind of funny though once the hood was on she put her wings out and her head down she really didn't like it bless her.
Heres Snoopdog,Tiercel, with his new hood...got to say i like these, the bird is so comfortable in it,very quickly..cheers Griff....meet the Partridge slayer...hopefully:confused: ..(will post better pics soon):!:

Looks a great fit :) His gape and nares are a bit wider thatn the average Tiercel... also his head size is very close to "Barbary" size. On average a 46S would be the size ....but the wide gape 43S looks spot on :) Looking forward to some better pics in the daylight!

Hi Gaz
Some sort of snake....its the same skin as "PeregrinesUK's" hood for his Pere Falcon. The one your talking about would fit a Lanner....the one at the back middle is the same skin...just different part of the snake.... that would fit a Pere falcon and is going to another forum member tomorrow :)
The "Yellow Peril" would fit a Barbary falcon.... stunning little hood.... :)

Do you think it will make a great difference over a normal leather slipper design ?
I know gortex is breatheable but you still sweat buckets when you wear a gortex jacket and it's warm.

Hi Jim
This Gore-Tex is taken from my old Military bivvy bag..... I used to kreep into my maggot... **** wet through.... and by morning I would be dry. Granted with excercise Gorte-tex still has trouble getting rid of excess moisture... but I would say that its use in the hood is perfect.... birds dont sweat :)

Hi Griff,
The hoods are a thing of beauty. Just a note on the slijper pattern for those who can't get the software to work. We found out when we were kids that the pattern in N.A. Fanconry and Hunting Hawks is pretty accurate, it's just the math that's wrong. We used to take the pattern to the local print shop and enlarge or reduce to fit the eye measurement. Much easier today with PC's and scanners. Final product might take a little tweak but not much.

I have always rated the Anglo India hood superior than any other type of hood. The Dutch is very ornamental.... But the Anglo Indian fits the bird like no other type of hood...

Well no...fact is I already have about 4 gloves and still use only one since it is just my favourite glove. Should that one be lost or whatever, i still have the other 3 which are almost unused. And by this 4 I mean the normal hawk/falcon gloves. I also have some small glove for spar. And might make some by my own as spare.

Fitting a Slijper hood for the first time.... if you have not used one before..... can be a bit tricky in so far as "understanding" the fit. What I normally tell people is to have the braces open just wide enough so it will slip over the head....... when its on.... gently close them a little..... then push the hood right back over the cere so that the point of the cere triangle is just off the cere..... this will then let everything else fit into place ie the soft gape not being covered etc.... once you have got this fit then close the braces fully.... ensuring that all is "equal" looking around the gape..... then get a water bottle spray and lightly spray the front of the hood so that you can see the water "bleed" into the edges of the gape..... this will have the action of "Moulding" any pressure points to the nares and cere giving a very comfortable , light tight, correctly fitting hood..... spray the hood once or twice more to ensure that comfortable fit...... and dont be afraid of getting water on the hood...... you will find that after a short period of time with use that the Slijper hood will naturally take the shape of your raptors head giving an even more comfortable fit and "Easy" hooding..... my Slijper hood for Hamish will stay on his head without the braces done up..... and even a good shake will not get it off Be aware also that if the bird has just eaten and then hooded that bits of food might get wiped onto the edge of the beak opening...... if this dries and is not cleaned off ..... it could cause an abrasion to the nares.
Some other benefits:
The Slijper Hood defeats "Turtle-necking" .... when the falcon becomes a bit more "dodgy" as confidence grows.
The neck band .... initially a close fit..... relaxes into the correct position for large castings to take place through the hood.
The more used the hood ... the better the fit..... and the longer the hood is used the more firm the leather becomes..... so initially its starts out "soft" and then hardens over time with the moisture continually being absorbed by it..... giving the "moulding to shape" qualites. Particularly beneficial for new birds.
