Right we are going to be building our new avairy for our wee man. Suggestions for suitable mesh would be appreciated ie plastic or metal.

If your gonna use mesh m8, then get weld mesh 50mm x 50mm square at 2-3 mm wire thickness. Try if you can to utilise a barred window with mesh across the front.

wondered about making it with the bamboo or similar or I know you can get plastic mesh but dont know how strong it is

I use barred windows on my aviary and use broom handles spaced at 3" centres, screwed to 2" by 1" tannalised battens. Works a treat! and no more damaged tail feathers! I find that my girl can't see the mesh at night and makes for it, so this is a WAY safer option.

If you insist on using mesh, Homebase do a good 2" square plastic mesh, that resists a bating fem harris, so its up to the job and doesn't hurt them.

Just lately converted a summer house to winter quarters for my FHH. Removed 2 windows from one side and one from the front. Replaced with steel mesh 25x12.5mm. On the inside I screwed battons 25mm square" with the inner edges rounded on my router" to all windows and mesh at a spacing of 70mm. The battons were made by ripping 150x25mm into strips and then running them through my router to give rounded edges on the inside. The 150x25 was treated timber and the overall effect is very good. The side, back and roof are lined with 8mm sheets of insulation and the sides and back are then covered 3/4 of the way up with builders polythene for easy cleaning.
I installed a swing in the centre and two side perches. The floor has a light covering of sand for easy cleaning.
I am in the process of constructing new summer quarters and it will be open fronted with 40mm mesh. The stuff I use is the stuff they use for road stabalising or to put down on grass for cars to drive on. I use it for ferret cages and anything else that needs a durable mesh. It is black in colour and does not require any maintenance. I know there are different views on this but it works well for me. Some of the larger builders merchants carry it .
I was lucky enough to get a roll from a finished site.

thes are just my thoughts on this & what I do, but not nec advice for others, just what sems to work best for me if that makes sense:
I tend to double line all my aviaries including roof mesh/ netting.
1~ outer / top layer is not that important, have weld mesh/ welded mesh/ chain link etc & in the past even used chicken mesh( at this point I reiterate most storngly that this is an outer mesh , I also have an inner 'bounce net/ mesh' so that the bop's never come into contact with outer mesh) to me more important to have it plastic coated than type of mesh as galvanising when coming intop contact with rain water can at best be possible health hazard to your BOP prefer small enough mesh so that rats cannot eneter aviary through mesh
2~ inner bounce net suspended AT LEAST 3 " below outer mesh I use spratt trtawler net very good and relatively cheap, only prob is that it is not square( being trawl net shaped) very strong and does not rot;-)
bear in mind tehse are for larger hawks falcons HTH J

i use north sea fishing net on my breeding avieries, get it from the net maker at north sheids fish quay. its thick strong and virtually rot proof if birds hit it hard it dosnt damage them and its easy to work with should last longer than the ply walls, i reccommend it, not to dear either.

see my previous thread. The mesh I use is some sort of hard polypropolene and I would not recommend it for birds that are prone to flying at mesh. I have been lucky in that all my birds although flying free did not cling to the mesh and I never had any feather damage. This applied to a FHH a EEO and a common Buzzard. The latter being so lazy that it would not eat anything unless it was skinned first. LOL . I prefer my birds to be able to see as much as they can and I think to put up 8m of vertical bars 2m high would be a lot of work. only my opinion though!

Knowle Nets (www.knowlenets.co.uk) advertise in the IBR directory.Perhaps they manufacture something useful.
