Hi need some advice on telemetry systems. I need a system for my FHH that I can expand as I get more proficient with different birds. All you veterans out there should have some advice if not what to buy what not to buy.

You need the telemetry more when you are not so proficient  Get the best you can afford. The only thing that changes with different birds is the size of the transmitter they can carry. More than 1 channel is the best bet, even better if you have a mate living near by, get one that runs on the same frequency (but not same channel) as theirs, you can borrow each others if something has to go for repair, or both go on a search if you can pick up each others birds on your receivers. Marshal, Luksander, any of the top makes

Personally I always think its best to buy a british made system if anything goes wrong it can be fixed within the Uk and your not having to wait weeks or months for it to be returned! Worst case scenario I know but you could lose a huge chunk of the season just waiting for the telemetry system to be returned!

I use a Falcon Telemetrics system one sold by Martin Jones, I find its an excellent system! Receiver casing is very strong, its reliable and it does all I require of it! Other systems people tend to recommend is the Falconry Electronics one, never used one before but those who do, recommend them highly!

We use the bio track and on a 1997 system the gain knob was sticking and sent it back to be replaced and serviced 4 days turn around can't complain about that.

I used Luksander for years and it never let me down. The only problem is the crystal in the transmitter only has a 3 month warranty.
Last year I tried a set of Marshalls and used them side by side and the Marshalls came out on top. IF you buy a set from Garlands the transmitters have a 3yr , no quibble warranty and the receiver 2yr.
I was using it on a female Gyr/Peregrine flying at gulls and had some major track downs. Goldie was there for a couple of them and can verify.
The price has come down of late and in my opinion it is very reasonably priced.
Contact Janette at Garlands if you need more info- 01827 383300.
( Ps I am not on commission I have just used it a lot and am impressed.)
Regards.

I have the Falconry Electronics Telem. I bought the 3 channel system TRX-3x but they do a TRX-16X which is a 16 channel system if you have a few birds.

They have many different size transmitters as well to suit your growing needs as time goes on.

Also the best thing about it is the owner Eddie. Very reliable and a nice chap to chat to. His after sales service is great. I had a problem with my transmitter last season and instead of me being without one for a while, eddie sent a temporary replacement so I didn't miss out on any hunting while my was being repaired. The is a 5 year warrenty on the Receivers and 2 years on the Transmitters.

Basically I can't fault it, and I have seen a friends system(can't remember which) and didn't like it. Infact after seeing my Falconry Electronics systems my friend bought the 16 channel one.

I hope this helps

I use Alpha RF (Wildlife Tracking Systems) they are UK based and guarantee all their equipment for life, the range is good and the new compact systems work well whole system complete with bag Transmitter and receiver one price
Have a look you can't beat them for service if they can't fix it in 24 hours then you get a new one. www.alpharf.co.uk tel 01322 666661, ask for Albert.

We too have a Marshall setup - very pleased with it - lovely kit.
We looked into where best to buy it from. When we bought - the States were not that much cheaper - by the time you've added tax on - and at least if anything goes wrong - you can take it back to Garlands.
Which frequency to go for? - In the end we plumbed for 173 because apparently although this has a slightly shorter range it carries a stronger signal - oh and of course the 216 is illegal !!!

Look at it as insurance - false economy to go for a cheaper option - there's a reason others cost less. If you buy a decent system - any out of - Marshall, Luksander or WMI (IMHO) - you can't go far wrong - they are all popular and hold their value. Also if you've lost a bird - plenty of other folk have these receivers and therefore can help you to look.

By the way - WMI is the same manufacturer as Falconry Electronics!

every falconer has his/her favourite telemetry but at the end of the day its the practice and the know how to use the system that comes out on top ;) so buy a good telem by a known maker and practice using it during the summer by the hunting season it should be second nature
