Been slowly acquiring falconry gear for last few months, my mate made these perches for me, however i am concerned that the height of the cross bar probably makes them unsafe. They are about 4 inches off the floor. If they are unsafe....... if he welded a further bar preventing any access under the present cross member do you feel they would then be fine ?? Sorry if its a daft ? but would rather ask:?:

i believe a good bow ,should bow instantly from the ground,ie the ring should be forced to travel the bow from right to left if the bird bates left, both yours have a flat spot which will probably snag the ring enough to stop the afor mentioned travel, i would prefere the one on the right without the flat vertical section, good luck,,,tarqs

One on left looks ok however:- my FHH can drag a mobile bow perch weighing 20lbs plus, yours dont look that heavy!!! so caution if leaving unatended.
Been trying to send you private mail so far unsucsesfull, new to this internet thingy magicy stuff so bear with me please.

I realy hate to be the bearer of bad news but feel I must tell you that both of the perches are absolutley useless!
I cannot stress this enough!
To use either is to cause injury or feather damage to your bird!

Please, if you do anything.
Do not use either of these perches
I beg you.

Ok thanks Blackbird ...... dont worry can take advice, ill splash out the cash and buy one of them gleaming ones with the black dimples. I thought there would be problems with them but just decided to check:cry:

I hope this is clear

Please throw the second perch away it is next to useless!

Take the first perch and modify it as shown below

1) cut and remove the bow at points A
2) cut and remove the crossmember at points B
3)Cut and remove parts marked as C from the perch feet and discard them!
4) Weld the crossmember between the perch feet forming a H shape
5) attatch and weld the bow, complete with the ring refitted to the perch feet in line with the crossmember.

If this is clear and you interpret it correctly you will then have an exellent and highly versatile, safe perch :D

If it is not clear please contact me and I will try to iron it out for you.

Yes its clear thanks, i'll have to build up the courage to ask him again. There was no charge just a favour. I gave hime some pics of perches from the net but he did something simular but not exact. I relize now what aspects of the design i should have emphasised. Shows how useful this site is.Thanks for your time.

guy who made the perches modified it for me, however i should have given him "the" diagram rather than told him verbally, as he's stilled used a bit of poetic license, although he lowered the crossbar he didnt place it at base its 6cm off floor, i not sure if the arc is starting a little late also,( im a bit gutted really) :(

I think the low bow perch is fine, am i correct

feed back apprecated.... thanks

just out of interest do you ever use a screen perch? bb?

Tim Laycock

Ellis, If Im honest the bows could still do with being a little more shallow, however they are a 1000% improvement :supz:

Good one m8 (I have seen supposed "top men" with birds on worse )

p.s your signature is mint!

BB, I would only use a screen with a parent reared Goshawk or Spar

In the past I have seen winnowing longwings in flying condition end up with square wings if left on a screen
Never yet had the misfortune to see a hawk hanging on the screen in the morning but there is time yet

BB, you seem to have some perch know-how.. how heavy does a portable bow need to be (for, say, a RT)? What would you suggest for feet?

(sorry for stealing your thread Ellis)

I usualy apply the rule of between twice and three times the weight of the bird, design of the perch feet has a lot to do with how easily it is dragged

For perch coverings I like the perch to be bound with rope and then skinned in kangeroo hide
For a RT I would say the padded area should be between 2 and 3 inch diamiter

I will post some of the bows I make when I find the pics

BB why the bits in the corners of the lower bow mate?:D

Paul, It started as a way of rectifying a dropped bollock!
The flat bar section was too short and the ring dropped over the end and became stuck:oops:

Its now become a bit of a signature on my stainless perches and the past three or four have been made like the picture with the inserted pieces an a more shallow angle to stop the ring dropping right to the floor.
It seems to work well:lol:

Cant make em fast enough:supz:

316 stainless steel, fully Tig welded construction padded with rope and Kangeroo but Im currently experimenting with rubber solutions that are painted onto waggon rope padding:supz:

Its interesting and I have been known to fly out of my garage on an evening (Snif, Snif:lol:)

Very nice BB! I've seen the corners used on other perches to get the rings to slide over easier. I dont suppose you sell them?

Tim Laycock

BB, how thick is diameter of the stainless tubing you used on the Tiercel gos perch? Would that be suitable for a male RT?

Tim Laycock

12mm (1/2") solid bar

Would be fine for a male red
