The short answer is when you get an INSTANT response to the fist over about 50 yards (or meters for you yung'ns  )
In reality A few instant responses. You will know by instinct, usually the creance gets in the bleedin' way:oops:

It's something that comes from reading the birds attitude and response. It is likely that because of the question asked this is your first hh this may mean you are hesitant to let her go free.
As she is 2yrs old what has been done with her previously?

i agree to both replies. if she dont responde "instantly" and she hesitates for a while, do not let her free. If you feel she is ready to come off the creance, then take her off. No one can judge but yourself when she is ready to come off.

all the best, and keep us informed of your progress :D

Frank,
whats her previous history, has she been manned before, are you just building a bond with her or is she a newbie to the game?
Interested to know, good luck with her and look forward to many a good days hawking.:supz:

No one can answer that for you with 100% accuracy. I assume you have experienced falconers around you teaching you the ropes etc, I suggest you ask them to accompany you and give their opinions after seeing the bird. It will be a gut wrenching time for you and I'm sure you'll appreciate having experience around as back up.

As a newbie myself, it was mere 3 months ago that I was in the very dilema you are now facing.

I was told that as soon as the bird does a full creance length let her go!!

I was well nervous and for belt and braces I tried her a double length (with the creance full length then me standing another full length away. ie the end of the creance in the middle between us).

Once she had flown that, I let her go. (to say I was "bricking it" would be an understatement).

She came straight to me, and wow, what a feeling.

Never looked back since.

As others have said, you'll know when the time is right. Enjoy the moment

i have a fhh and she's still hesitant or will only respond when she feels like it......so i guess I have a long way to go......however i am working on reducing weight slowly and offering better rewards to see if it makes any difference.........how have you found your fhh response....did you go through the same thing as i am facing........

The dilemas I am facing:

1. No instant response
2. Dont want to reduce weight too much.
3. My bird seems to get distracted very easyly even though I have spent a lot of time manning her..

Any suggestions please.....

id like to thank you all, for your kind word's of advice and support.
she is my first bird, she has history hunting, however, she has not hunted this season.

at close rage she is very responcive but i sometimes have difficulty getting her attention from any real distance. she's currently very keen at 2.5 but im having difficulty dropping her weight below this, i feel that if i could drop her just a little more im sure she would come. (i love her and im teriffied to lose her)

If she is not keen at any real distance, then she is too high and her weight needs to come down. It should not be a problem dropping her weight; just feed her less! Although, obviously, I have not seen your bird and there are no absolute rules in this situation, 2lb 5oz sounds at the higher end flying weight wise for a FHH.

Get her weight down, get her off the creance as soon as possible and give her some easy flights at bolted rabbits. Best of luck.

i normally go for 100m of flight on a line when called. but the bird must come instantly
