Got a call from a friend last night asking if i fancied a hunt, i said yes and we arranged it. rolf weighed in at 1lb 5.5oz but with a pellet. there was four of us and 3 birds, 2 experienced females and rolf lol.bit windy and the odd shower, but seemed ok. left one of the females in the car and headed out, first set produced a good flight, but ended with the birds crabbing, was a bit worrying, was put down to the fact that breeding season is near , lol who knows. so after that we decided to take turns on slips. another rabit bolted from the set, it was my slip, but rolf didnt look at it! think it was because of what happened the last time he chased one. so headed up his hedgerow and into a big big steep hill top, mates bird got a flight from a set but unsuccesfull, then rolfs turn, rabbit bolted about 80 yards away from us(was way up on the hill) and ran a good 200 yards before going into the next field. as i was running as fast as i could this rabbit appared next to me, runnign alongsaide me lol, bolted from the same set, it was a race between me and teh rabbit to see who could get to the next field, this rabbit wasnt changing course lol, and behind it was my mates bird lol. rabbit ran into the field and rolf appeared outa nowhere and dropped on it, then the other bird, but it was just too tough and got kicked off, mate got his bird back, then as i was crossing the fench ready to walk up the hill my mate signals to me theres a ferret in a set at the very bottom of the hill and its my slip, didnt have enough time to get up the hill do stood down from the set, everythign worked perfect, rabbit bolted to the right, instead of where they have been going, probually cause i was on their path lol. rolf boosts of after it a good 200,maybe 300 yard flight ending with rolf holding it with it at one side of a fallen tree trunk and him on the other(hard to explain) was only about 1 oclock so decided to take him off it, and as i did the little **** managed to nick a chick out of my bag, so got him up, pretty wet from being on the floor and took as most of the chck i could get, but he musta had most of it lol. let my mate tree the next 2 or 3 sets, and ending in a dig on teh last, after this, which took about 15 minutes both birds were pretty wet but we hunted on lol, got to another steep hill, my mate got the first slip, cracking flight but rabbit ran uphill into a set at a hedgrow. next, was my turn, tried a set but was empty, tried another set at the foot of the hill, and i was on top, rabbit bolted, with a good 100 yard advantage, but rolf took of like a rocket, and caught it by the head near a hedgrow at the end of the field, WHAT A FLIGHT, as i said it was a very steep hill, so it was tough getting down lol, surprised my ankles are still intact, luckily due to the head shot, he still had it, dispatched it and then took him and the rabbit into the next field, feed him up of and while my mate hunted on, took a pic of him with his 2 rabbits today below. got back to the car, boxed him up and headed back out to meet them, still hadnt got anything, and decided to get the other female out, had a good few flights, with rabbits mostly bolted at right angles. she hit one, but it got off, and then we all called it a day. so rolf = 2, two experienced birds = 0 lol

heres a pic of rbabit number 14 and 15

Nice one Sean. Better than my last hunting trip of the season on Saturday.

Ferret layed up, my bird got nailed in the head by a BAD tempered FHH, I got a tallon in my thumb up to the hilt trying to part them, lost a tag in the process (found it later), my bird would only run on the ground after getting nailed and went home empty handed.

85% of posts are in General Falconry and it slows the system if everything in in one spot and accessed from there too.

good stuff sean looks like your rolf is the more experienced lol, just keep an eye with the females and rolf as if they nail him it could be the end of him ?? ,also some time if the bird gets a few stabs off another bird it sets them back as they spend the day looking out for the other bird instead of hunting , cheers dave

Nice one sean seems you are really into your hawking mate and nice to see you doing things the right way but just a thought on your last outing wet bird a bird thats been upset on a kill by another larger hawk i personally would have fed up on the first rabbit to reinforce as you said yourself previous to the kill slip that your bird was a bit peturbed after the crabbing incident, still it worked out for you in the end mate but these little decisions can make all the difference sometimes and i know we can get excited by flying with others but we must make decisions for the bird at all times.

cheers romeo, the next rabbit after the little bit of crabbing rolf didnt chase, which is probually because of what happened. ive flow with this bird about 8 times now, and usually theres no fighting, i think theres been once maybe twice before, but that was in their first fewoutings. now all of a sudden its changed. do u think this is because of the breeding season?

hi sean its hard to say what causes a harris to change and make them grab out one day and not the next,as my male is a bully and will stab out most times, but other harris hawks this can be food the pecking order being astablished while out the first few times , fustration on not catching and then the other bird does so they go in as ****ed off ,just keep an eye on things cheers dave as it only takes one grab at the face and an eye lost
