Thanks Paul,
I really like the idea of the country flags, as when reading posts and someone mentions the area their in, half the time I couldn't tell you where a certain town or small city is unless it is well known (within reason) or is in North America.
Anyways thanks again,

Just an observation but why is it do you think, that most the welsh, and scottish falconers on this site use their own national flags, as against the bulk of the guys using the union jack who are predominantly english, are we less patriotic,or is there a resentment at the [ union] in some areas..colin

Its either we are less patriotic or that we are more diplomatic and try to ensure that minorities are included under the Union?:-P

I think the answer for the Scots at least is that when you put your country of residence as being Scotland it automatically inserts the Scottish flag!!
In saying that I certainly would put the union jack as my flag, not through any resentment its simply that I'm Scottish so it is completely natural for me to use the Scottish flag.. I cant answer for the English members unfortunately ;)

After 10 years of blair it does not mean much to be british or part of the united kingdom, both have been sold down the river. Now that matters only concerning england can be pushed thru using the votes of scottish mps who do not have the decency to abstain, has for me signalled that the union surely cannot survive for much longer.
imho the union jack is fast becoming a worthless symbol of a bygone age.

I see what you are saying but can assure you it has worked in reverse on many occasions in the past, to Scotland's detriment.
Now that the SNP have in some ways effective control in Scotland it will be interesting to see if their desire for a fully independant Scotland will indeed put the Union under greater threat.
Personally, given the recent influx to the UK as a whole of "foreign" settlers under EU and other legislation means that the identities of all the UK nations are fast being eroded so we wont have any of the separate flags soon, just the EU one!!

Under the last tory government they had 1 term where they didn't have an MP in scotland and in their last term they had 1 MP yet they used english MPs to push through laws that related to and affected scotland only. It may be just a case of what goes around comes around. i would say the last Tory government did more harm to the union than Blair (and i have no time for Blair) in the way that Tory government treated scotland - any one remember the poll tax that the tory government were nice enough to test out on scotland 1 year before they tried it out on england.
I live in scotland and have always classed myself as scottish and proud of the fact that i am hence why i used the scottish flag. I have nothing against England or the Union. I have friends who are english and i always have a good time when i am down in england.
There is more to it than just pride

I use the flag as it puts a location to where I am from, the UK ain't big I know but it narrows down the location.
Ah who am I kiding, Im a nationalist. And from the family history, its ingrained in the blood.

I put any of my minimally anti-English views down to the bias displayed in sport by English sports commentators. They make me want to spew.
If a Scot is doing well in sport , he/she is British ,if he is doing badly he/she is Scottish. It is quite the reverse if it is English sportsmen/women.
Look at the national anthem used by The English. It makes as nations apart.
I have to watch any sport involving English commentators with the volume down.
Always proud to be Scottish ,not always proud to be British.;)

i don't care what flag is used. I'm british and I think of the welsh, irish & scottish as my british brothers & sisters. I can't be arsed with all this infighting. bring back our status as an island and do away with the EU, that would make me happy.

gdn, please dont take what i said as an attack on scotland in fact i lived in edinburgh/ stirling for several years and would move back tomorrow if i could.
I am though english and like you proud of your roots.
No doubt injustice have been caused/ percieved on both countries, i could spout the barnett formula you say north sea oil revenues etc.
All i would say is that whoever is right the union is now a lot weaker. And the west lothian question is not helping things.
Gordon Browns fav football moment wont change that!

Always proud to be Scottish ,not always proud to be British.;)Neil i will give you some of that mate, but id like you to also listen carefully to some of the scottish commentry,i think youll find very much alike ,if for instance you watch match of the day in england, the commentators are often all scottish, hansen, sometimes dalglish, lawrenson is irish,or andy gray on sky sports? ive no probs with any of these guys commenting on liverpool united games, but could you imagine, english or welsh players commenting on celtic and rangers on scot sport, which incidentally is mostly what we get in cumbria!..colin

Although I didnt know think I had a choice on the falgs, as they just came up, I know that if you went round waving a Scottish/Welsh/English Flag youd get a slagging and no real harm is done, you try waving a british flag, or hanging it out your window and see how you get on...the jack has been ruined as a symbol of our countries, it is now seen as a racist/bigotted symbol of our multi cultural society.
I am proud to have a saltire/scottish flag hanginmg over my window, like my neighbour is to have a nigerian flag over his (he from the nigeria just south of islington) and give as good as I get as far as slagging over sport goes, being the solitary Scot at this uni. (Foreign Student apparently)

well correct me if im wrong but i seem to remember a history lesson in school which stated that the welsh flag is not represented in the union jack. therefore ever since then i have looked upon it with little affection.
i think the rivalry between the countries within the uk is a healthy one and an understandable one. being a rugby fan i will always support a celtic nation over the english. probably because i tend to support the underdog:roll: however i will always support the english when playing a 'foreign' side
however if like in the 1st and 2nd world wars we ever go to war again i would just as happily die fighting next to an english brother as i would a scot or irish 1.
i am sure that the same goes for almost every person within the uk. it is this spirit which unites us and makes us a proud nation. together we stand united we fall. my grandfather always taught me this.

Is there a 'stats' page on this forum so we can see how many falconers there are from each country? Also, I don't know all of the flags. Could the mods add the name of the country next to the flag? That way I do learn the flag-country connection.
Thanks.
