Hello.
Are Peels bells worth £22(quite fancy the black ones). I've checked most of the falconry web sites and there bells are cheaper. Has anyone tried perhaps two different makes and have any preference or views.
Cheers
i use a lachore bell, but it does my head in, when youve dont everything to be silent at a set, and then the bird starts flicking its beck with his leg and the bells going ring ring lol. wonder if anyone flys without bells because of things liek this

I have been using Peels bells and highly recommend them.
Sean I have this season been using a home made bewit which has a velcro fastening.Obviously not as secure as traditional types but it suits me for various reasons to be able to take the bell off easily and although I have had it come off in the field this is rare and I have yet to loose a bell.My bird by the way has never removed it.
In fact I started the season not using any bells[with telemetry only]but would not recommend this particularly with following on,it is surprising how much we rely on the sound of the bell.

Hi
I have had three bell makers bells, and I can honestly say that Andy Peels bells are the best ... I could hear a Peels bell at my falcons highest pitch...something that didnt happen with the other two....especially usefull when you are trying to flush to get an idea of where your falcon is whilst concentrating on the ground (and it was tailmounted).

peels bells are the best and thay last.
not like the rest.
hi OF, the transmitter i use on him weighs about 11 grams, so i dont wana be putting on too much extra weight with a bell if you know what i mean, hobby any pics of this bewit it sounds good. another problem i have with bells is that(in my case anyway) every so often the bewit strecthed and the bell hangs, and could be a threat to catching a talon, its happened to my bird about 3 or 4 times now. i use the traditional bewit with a cable tie fastining, the way you see in hollinsheads book

Sean,
Stick some thin card in the bell slit to silence them.
If you just want them silent while you are stalking, stick a small square of wet tissue paper on them. It will deaden the sound, but the bells will still work when the tissue falls off.
Wet and stretch your leather BEFORE you make your bewits, then they won't stretch later!
There are not many things in falconry that haven't been done before.
thats great derry, thanks very much :D

Ricardo Velarde does make a decent bell but prefer Larry Counce bells myself. I had a couple of Coopershawk sized bells for the male gos, very loud and crystal clear - plus not expensive.

I think the bells Andy Peel make are great and worth every penny, I think I’m right in saying there all hand made where as the majority of commercial bell makers tend to use a press so they can churn out lots of bells in double quick time! Considering Andy makes them all by hand I’d say his bells are extremely good value for money in comparison to other makes of bells! You can see the time and work that goes into each bell! I can’t comment on the black bells as I haven’t used them! But I have got a pair of Andy’s beryllium bells on my harris which are into there second season and by the look and sound of them they’ll go on to a 3rd/4th season and maybe longer!

I have heard good things about Andy Peels bells and have never heard anyone knock them for quality.
Unfortunatley I have never tested them, Andy did contact me when he started to make the bells and said he was posting a set to me to try out but he forgot to send them and I have never got round to buying a set yet but when I do I will let everyone know what I think.

I have seen and heard, counces, nobels, pineos, lahore and of course mine. Without question Doug Pineo's bi coloured ones beat them all. I shall buy a few of Mr Peel's when he is up and running and I will buy a few of Salman Ali as well.

press.
Ben C
29-06-2006, 01:50 PM
Yep.....those are the ones and they are pressed.
What I have found is that there is no such thing as 'the best' bell. So much depends on your own hearing. Ones that I like Lucy hates. The Larry Counce ones I bought were quieter than the ones I made for Blackehawke, but I prefered the counces tone. I had some from the Czech republic which I loved, then listened to the Pineo/velarde ones and they sounded dull. Mine are lighter than Peels from what I have been told, but are also a fraction louder...however his look a little more hard wearing...........it goes on and on.
Each to their own I suppose. But if I could make them as loud and as slick as the velarde ones I would be a happy man!!
As for looks.....Salman Ali has that in the bag by spades.........check them out on the Modern Apprentice site...AWESOME!!!

Just been going through this thread thanks for all your comments it is nice to hear you like the bells.
AngelJakki i am sorry the black came of the bells, this is a manufacturing error and as soon as i am up and running when the house is done i will send out a new set for you. As i say to everyone if you are not happy with the bells please tell me then i can do something about it.
I will exchange any bells and even give you money back, if i bought something which wasnt right i would be straight on their case:x .
Please dont forget Angeljakki and get in touch and i will make you a new set with the new material which i sent Griff early last year.
I promise you will not hear better bells:supz: i carnt say fairer than that.
PS i dont do the blacking process myself i send them away it just shows you are best doing things your self to get thing right.
All the best
Andy.

Peels Bells are the only ones I can hear at distance.... I am not just saying that.... I have a Noble size 1 and a Peel Berilium of a similar size...... they are both leg mounted and its Andy's I can hear not the Noble.
I have just sent off for some size 2 Velarde Acorn Bells to give them a go as well.

Cheers for that:supz: ive seen some of your pictures looking good. I think that more people should learn to make their own equipment i am hoping to go into something easier as the art should be past on as i dont think i wont to make bells for ever as they are time consuming and like you said not good on the thumbs. I prefer to fly my birds and breed them and that takes most of my time up these days.

andy why do you think we don't make our own? i'd rather give you a few quid for making you're thumbs sore, my bird was fitted with a tail bell off you, it came off with N.E.H.H transmiter also atached we tracked it to the middle of a road, it had been ran over countless times and apart from being flat all the seams were intact, good work fella, anyway it's lost it's tone now so can i have me money back, l.o.l

I started out thinking 'this year I'll make all my own equipment, whats the one thing no one makes....ahhh Bells'. Well I have as you can see only made the bells so far, so the hood, glove and swivel will have to wait!!!!!!! I don't know about you, but they are addictive little things...getting the sound right can be good fun if you concentrate.....however I cannot compete with pressed or machined ones for finish or solidity.
I'll swap you a pair of your choice when your up and running????? Fair deal?? :supz: :supz:
