I fly a Gos and a Harris. I fly a passage gos during the winter on Ducks and Pheasant. I have a Harris for Summer hawking crows. In the US we have seasons for all game birds. On top of that I have dense cover, good for a gos. For a longwing I would have to drive for at least 3 hrs for a good slip.

well im pretty boring and prefer the usual hh!!
i love the fact that you can go out as group and hunt with other hh like they would in the wild! i havent flown many birds or ever had my own so i gues my preferences could change somewhat! but at the mo i  flying the hh!

I agree Amazon. I have a tiercel Harris's hawk at the moment and I enjoy the ease of flights with this bird with my hectic schedule. I can have the bird out and flying within a matter of minutes in just about any terrain available. I tend to call the Harris the lazy falconers bird since once trained, they are SO easy to fly. I will take on a harder charge sometime in the future, but for now, this suits my needs.

If its about just personal preference I prefer the Harris just because of the way it looks.
Having never flown a BOP at quarry I'm limited to looks and love the colours of a Harris.
Sorry if not the point.

for me, falcons are great but I think maybe a hawk or buzzard would be better with the time i might have, but for now falcons are exciting, fun and go so fast its unbeliveable lol.
But one day, it's going to be a black eagle and chiliean eagle lol. Not both, either of them. I'll move somewhere nicer too. They are fantastic!

Agreed! 100%
I have flown a few different species, but the "humble" Harris' is my favourite too

from what other people havbe said, they are easier to manage then a full on eagle (not the black eagle) and good to hunt and nice to fly, so once I have got some decent experiance, the money, land and time a chilian is the eagle I'd like first.
shiro is amazing, he starts of slow but just whistles in and tried to catch u off guard. He knows the tricks like using the sun and ditches and tree's and he is unbeliveable fast once he gets going. Falcons are amazing lol. Not flown a peregrine free so I can imagine they are totally different.

I wouldn't say i have noway anoth experiance to say what bird i like best though. But i think my favorite looking bird is a Whit Gyr falcon.

whos gyr is that? does it have a full white tail?
My favourite birds are the small accipiters. Partly because of the huge amount of quarry available and you can hunt twice a day. But primarily because of the hyper way they fly...just wish i could get one

Most definately the Lanner Falcon would top my list of favorite raptors, along with Gyrfalcons, Red-tail hawks, and Golden Eagles.
Is this an accipter? Attachment 10480 (http://www.falconryforum.co.uk/attachment.php?attachmentid=10480)
Yes, it is an adult Cooper's Hawk (Accipiter cooperii), I see them around my house every once in a while. I've heard the female Cooper's Hawk can take prey up to the size of a Ruffed Grouse. :?:

I'll go for the Harris for now, but I am entertaining the idea of pulling an eyass coopers hawk this spring.

- Must be a well trained and fit Adult Male Peregrine. The ultimate falconers bird!
The H/H must come in second place due to its intelligence and social behaviour with humans (It can be trained to catch numerous types of quarry also).

gosh gosh gosh gosh gosh gosh gosh gosh gosh gosh gosh gosh gosh gosh gosh gosh gosh gosh gosh gosh gosh gosh gosh gosh and not to forget a gosh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!its the only bird that hunts everything everywhere!lot of speed, most beautifull and capable for bunnys, cottontails, patriges, pheasants, quails, ducks ,magpies,ravens,squirrels......do you want more?????????????you can fly it or in woodland or in open land as well!for me its the best bird of prey!:supz:
CotswoldRedtail
21-04-2008, 04:46 PM
Depends, Longwings: Pure pere tiercel, love the looks, love the style of flight however I don't have the land or game to do one justice
Broadwings: Redtail, much underrated, gutsy, stunning lookers and when manned up well, a pleasure to be in the field with
Shortwings: Gos, of course!! needs no introduction!
So, over all preference? Pere x Saker f. for Rooks/Gulls, have the land and quarry, presently don't have the time but watch this space!

I think with a lot of falconers its not what you would like to fly but what land, quarry and time you have that decides what you can fly.It would be amazing to fly an eagle but its not going to happen(money and land available)same with a falcon(no suitable land).I love to fly redtails but cant(no bunnys anywhere)which leaves me with my favourite the goshawk(i just about have enough money,i have the time, experience and land)
