Read VBulletin's code of ethics on it.
Why can you read them on your forum?

most passwords on forums etc. are encrypted in a database anyway.
I.P addresses are logged for security reasons as well as many other functions.

I think its right that the admin should have the IP info, for banning and control and such...but for a moderator to talk openly on a public forum about members' IP addresses is against the DPA..full stop!
It shouldnt have happened and I thought it was bad form is all.

17-02-2006, 06:56 PM
How has it got anything to do with Data Protection? IP addresses are freely available to everyone that you communicate with, email etc.
Tooker
17-02-2006, 07:05 PM
IP addresses can be obtained by anybody completely legally. They aren't personal information :)
Scruff
17-02-2006, 07:09 PM
because you are giving personal information out to public that wasnt agreed to by member having given you this info in confidence. ...like passwords, the Ip is like a fingerprint to where a member is based. I'm a moderator on another site and I wouldn't dare give out confidential info like that. Do you think this is ok to do Hawkmaster? This worries me....I mean , if you dont think anything's wrong with giving that sort of info out, but it would upset me .

To get any useful information from an IP address you need to go to the ISP responsible for that address. Also, most people use dynamic IP addresses therefore their address changes each time they log on to the internet.
ISPs do not give out their customer details to any joe bloggs - they rarely give it to the police (one reason hax0rs get away with pretty much everything).

oops sorry..my bad then... I was told an IP address was a pc address and was linked to the location ot the PC (ie: home) so a persons home could be discovered...not being paranoid or anything....but If I wanted my home address to be public..it would be.

Sean,
I think Sparrow is workin on the database. If something happened he may have restored it from a prior time. Please be patient with him till he gets it sorted.

If you have good firewalls and other protection; your pc, will tell you if someone has tried to corrupt or get into your pc; mine also tells me the country, town etc. of the 'violation' with the IP address and user...........

I havent?
You are mistaken, unless my cp is telling lies
If it was not intended it matters not;)
Now I know it doesn't take much.........................but I'm confused!!
This thing about reputation points and clicking on your scales. I've done that......and, yes, it tells you how many reputation points you have. But how do you know if they are good or bad? What is the point of this? - as I have obviously missed it altogether:(
Can some enlightened soul explain? Sorry to go off topic here!
Tim Laycock

Go into your user cp, below the box with "New subscribed threads" there should be a box stating "latest reputation recieved"
Click in the corner and it will drop down and tell you what the deal is;)

I just think you are all getting a bit nuerotic over this.
Ask yourself, who would bother to try and track your address down using your IP.
All you have to do is stick your name and town in an address/telephone number search finder and hey presto!

Sean, I can't imagine anyof the mods would take the time to fill in your profile for you... it really isn't a big deal.
