This Year will be my first time Incubating.. I have decided to go down this route because my Redtails only Hatched 1 from four eggs last year....
In addition to Redtails Hopefully Lanner eggs(not holding my breath though) and maybe some Harris hawk eggs ... I may let the harris's do it them selfs tho.
I'm going to tell you how I have prepared so far and hopefully some of you can give me some pointers or even constructive critsim
Food..
5 days Quail....two of those day's I feed fresh still twitching quail. 1 day of Rabbit or squirrel 1 day of ungutted chicks
Incubators/brooders
I have one oct 20 pro (that has the humidity controler) and 2 additional oct 20 DX's
1 Brinsea TLC 4 Brooder and intend to make a second stage brooder with two fireglow bulbs on a twin dimmer switch (have made a prototype from s**** wood and tested on quail) Oh and brinsea cool lume high intensity candeler
Incubator Room !!
I have set aside a large walk in cuboard within inside my house as a incubation room and coated/ceiling the walls with Gloss paint and covered the floors with heavy duty plastic (humidity here is currently 33%)
Running the incubators dry here I get 15% humidity
Research
I have read the nick fox book on the subject ... The falcon propagation book as well as a few others....and studied one video of nick fox "preparation for breeding" and about to order the thrid on "incubation and hatching"
Practice !!!
I have familirised myself with the incubators and egg weight charts by hatching quail (based on 13% weight loss for quail eggs)
Now I spoke with Terry a week or so ago and was advised that Redtail eggs can be a bit of a problem to get the weight off.. It was also agreed that a post on the subject of incubation may be of Intrest to all lot of people
so if any of you guys can give constructive advice on any of the above and on controling egg weight loss during Incubation I am all ears.
Regards Flame

Thats why there trade secrets.
i understand that mate but at the end of the day everyone is quick enough to condem people for not doing things right, surely we should all help each other out to a certain degree surely breeding quality birds is the most important thing people should strive for even if it doesnt concern them it can only promote good breeding practice,at the end of the day,i try to breed the best pups i can whenever i have a litter,if someone asked me for advice id go out of my way to help,id be pleased and touched if someone took my advice and did that little extra to make the breed of dog or line that much better,i know bop breeding is a 1000 times more complicated than dog breeding but it shouldnt hidden away to an extent where the breed suffers come on guys ur views please.........

Rather than an incubation problem, it sounds like a cyncrnicity problem between male and female bird.

It is important to not let the temperature of the incubator/brooder room to fluctuate too much, a stable temp is best along with a stable and adjustable humidity.
Good luck, and keep us informed!

Most adjustable humidity units are useless for the job in hand as they only add not take away moisture. You need to loose not gain weight!

Hi Flame is coming here to attend the AI course and I believe was one of the people who also wanted the course to include Incubation, this is far better learnt by hands on type of learning than by me spouting off pages and pages of info on here.
If there are enough people interested in a days introduction to Incubation I have already said that I would be willing to run a course just for this. There is such a lot to learn about Incubation that if I were to start it here then I might as well just sit down and write a book and sell it but I just don't have the time.

hi what happened to the red tail eggs that didnt hatch. were their fully formed chicks in them or were they clear( not fertilized) if they appeared fresh when broken open they were not fertile. if they were milky part rotten but no sign off a chick they were fertile but it died in the very early stages of incubation. the unhatched egg tells a lot.

That is dependant on how each individual egg is acting in the incubation system some may need humidity higher than running dry some may need less so you would have 3 choices 1, install a dehumidifier in the Incubation room or add Silica crystals to incubator or drill egg, the choice is yours I use a combination of all 3 at times

I agree but an open ended question like I need to know about incubation is a bit lame Terry. The ammount of subject matter is enormous, as you rightly say and the danger is missinterpritation of infomation recieved. When it comes down to it a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Go do the course with Terry he has a lot of knowledge to impart to those who are willing to learn.

Karl, I have no doubt that you know what you are doing with incubation and it is an open ended question but I just had to answer what you said and it has proved to me what I thought so now I will call you Timex the self winding watch lol and if you F*ck up with the GE eggs your gonna get it good from me lol

That was my conclusion but after reading GosFlyers Post It is possible that they were fertile as the eggs when opened were milky and part rotten
Also in hindsight it is a opened ended subject to post about & perhaps I should have carried on been the tight lipped person I am and not posted.. However I suppose what I was after was constructive critsim on how i have gone about preparing so far (altho that is the easy bit )
Terry
I signed up for a AI course ( which i really looking forward too!) .
Incubation was mentioned after (not by me) although I did state Incubation would be great... I'm coming down to you for a AI course to gain knowledge for the future should I ever decide to take that route.. not to pester you about Incubation.
However If you do an Incubation course ill be there too..!
Thanks to all others that have replied

For the main part the eagle eggs are going to be incubated by the parent bird.
