Hey everyone, I joined awhile ago but like others have been a quiet observer, thought it was time to introduce myself! I am a college student that works at a rehab/education facility specializing in raptors in the USA. I am currently flying (for demos, not hunting as we aren't liscensed to do so) a MHH, FHH, barn owl, and turkey vulture, and am getting geared up to train 2 bald eagles for manning on educational programs. I have thought of getting into falconry but know that now is not the time as my life wouldnt permit it right now, so I think I'll wait until I'm settled somewhere. I have learned a lot here and hope to continue!

I love it, there is just something about seeing bops fly that is amazing-it makes a greater impact on the public too for the education I do. I've been reading through the eagle posts trying to prepare for the bald eagles....I'll let ya'll know how it goes with them!

Well, starting out probably a red-tail (not too many choices when you first get started!) Then I'm not sure, I love the HHs I work with so I might go with one of them. I guess I'd have to look at my choices with each stage in falconry as I went. What about you?

Coyote, if your Bald Eagles are juveniles - watch yourself! We've been training one at our center over the past couple of years and he tests his limits all the time. I've heard that this is how most of them are until they are mature because of their gregarious nature in the wild.
Good luck with them, and don't be afraid to get your own bird when your ready - I'm getting a red this fall to keep me sane in my fourth year of University.

Its ironic you should post that as just today while doing the young male bald eagle he started to show some signs of aggression not typical of him, (he is probably around 2-3 years old as he still has dark on his head and tail) the older female still seems relatively consistent. I'll definatly keep that in mind! Right now I have my plate full with the centre's birds, many projects going! Good luck with getting the red in the fall!

Beautiful bird Coyote! Do you fly her free at all? (she has no Jesses on so just wondering)

CoyoteOutlaw

No she was never flown, she is actually about 20 years old and has a wing injury. This is the first redtail I feel in love with, she lives at a wildlife rehab and education facility. She doesn't have jesses on because she was an overly aggressive bird that they didn't use for off site programs- I started working with her and she was awesome- she accepted me and after I built a bond with her I could care for her injured wing without having to cast her with a towel or anything. (which was really my only goal other than the learning experiance of dealing with an aggressive bird). The birds from this center aren't flown (they have mews large enough to fly in but they aren't flown by handlers) That is one of the main reasons why I came to the new centre, to train free flight demo birds.

She was hit by a car and brought to the centre back in 1982 :( She is an amazing bird, she would have been gorgeous to see fly!
JayHawk- I'll try to get some pics of the balds up here soon!

Poor thing:roll: Has she bred at all?

The redtail hasn't been bred. here are some quick pics of the balds, the first is the older female and the second is the young male.

How old are they? He's got his mature plumage but you said he's young... they look so much nicer in their proper colours! (Our male is only 3, and is still all mottled)

CoyoteOutlaw
26-02-2006, 09:33 PM
The male is still mottled, you don't see as much of it in that picture, but he still has it in his tail and on his head (sorry, lighting wasn't very good today) The female is probably in her teens or 20s.
