I'm very new to all this so it may seem a silly question but....
i am considering getting a mhh but after a very short time of looking at the Tethering equipment forum have already confused myself!

I was gonna post this in the questions begginers ask section but though i may get more replies if it was here.

what is this most simple and safest equipment.

will I need one set if i need to teather and a diffrent set to hunt with??

help

I would say dont start at reading the forum but get a book. Start with the basics then use the forum if you come unstuck, or for sharing experiences.

the easiest way to learn the very basics of equipment etc. is to beg any one and every one who lives any where near you to let you go round and see them. Offer any help they want doing anything  plead and grovel. In a book it can appear a bit confusing, especialy the knot for tethering. In fact it is quite easy but there are several different types of equipment and all so much easier if you can actualy see how it all fits together and why. Good Luck...Hope you can find some help and a friend !!!

Anklets are the same for both but the rest is different, as said, a book would help loads with this as there are various setups and people have their own preferences.

this site has some good info though:

Basically mews jesses have slits in this is so the swivel can be placed through and secured. Should never fly a bird with mews jesses on because the slits in the jesses can lead to the bird being caught up in a tree etc and it could die as a result.

Flying jesses don't have any slits in therefore it dramatically reduces the chance of the bird from being caught up.

It can all get a bit confusing especially with all the terminology etc, as has been suggested purchase a couple of books as it should explain it in great detail.

Another alternative are the Bullet Jesses.
Check out previous threads for info.

Are Bullet Jesses safe for teathering? I was always led to believe that they shouldn't be used to tether birds.

basic outline of equipment you will need:

for teathering:
anklets (these are perment unless they are being changed when broken or old) mews jesses, a swivel, a leash, a perch! and a mews/avairy to keep bop in! and a waterbowl!

for flying:
flying jesses (replaces the mews jesses)!

basically when you reach your flying ground and the bop is flying off the creance you take all th "theathering" equipment of (except the anklets of course)!!!

there are various other bits and pieces needed for your bop of course. this is a VERY basic outline!!
read the emma ford book!!!! it sets falconry out for you nice and simple!!!

Some say yes some appear to say no. The problem that some people had, is that if the eyelets are too big for the bullet, a bird can play with them and undo them. If they are a tight fit and have a 'slip washer' that pushes up to hold the bullet against the eyelet they should be fine. the other problem is on poorly made bullet jess, the bullet simply pulls off the cord.
Personally I use bullet jess a lot when going to and from hunting grounds etc. but am a coventional s.d and prefer mews jess & swivel etc. for tethering.

well said m8.
Ideal for field work.
Easier to use than conventional slit jesses.
