Im sorry if ive missed this on any previous thread. I understand most aspects of bird flue..... how its transmitted, how people can catch it, how it could mutate etc etc. However i don't quite understand how this crisis is going to come to an end, with foot and mouth we were shown graphs of previous outbreaks projecting peaks and forcasting erradication etc. I suppose i know what could happen and how the problem may escalate but ive got no idea how the problem will eventually go away. Can anyone enlighten me ?

When, and not if, bird flu reaches the Uk it is likely to be endemic in the wilbd bird population for a long time. It was much easier to predict the progression of foot and mouth outbreaks in livestock, cattle and sheep are not so mobile as wild birds, also stock numbers are required to be recorded and registered and their locations are, in theory, documented.

Echo Rentons sentiments, Defra acted very late indeed when Foot and Mouth hit the UK this lead to a massive cull in livestock because they delayed action somewhat and didn't know how far the virus had spread.

With Bird Flu your dealing with something that's ineffect uncontrollable, being that wild migratory birds have the ability to pass it on. As has been seen in foreign countries culling is the only method to stop the spread of the virus, and its more than likely Defra would take the same action!

Does anyone know how Bird Flu was created? Was it created by man, science that went wrong?

It seems more likely that various strains of H5N1 has been infecting Chinese poultry for at least the last ten years according to a paper in the New Scientist.
