Just wondering if anyone has been able to claim any vets fees from Exotic Direct if their bird has been bitten by a rat whilst out hunting. I phoned for a claim form this morning and was told my bird was not covered
General Excusion in my policicy states;
'Any veterinary fees and/or death benefit as a result of attack by vermin'
My Harris sustained four puncture wounds on her left foot yesterday after being bitten by a ****** rat. It was to be her last outing before putting her down for moult.
I ended up taking her from near scunthorpe to Harcourt Browns at Harrogate for out of hours treatment. I couldn't stem the bleeding even with potassium permanganate crystals.
The lady vet that attended to her, cleaned her up and gave her the usual shots. She didn't think the wounds needed stitching and couldn't find ant tendon damage, but when I went into my bird this morning there was a huge area of blood (I would say at least a tablespoon+) under her bow which appeared to have come from one bite area. She will not stand on her foot and it is very very hot (hotter than if she had the foot tucked up).
My bird also had water coming from her left nostril and her left eye looked watery. Vet checked her eyes but said they were ok.
My concern is that she will need further veterinary treatment today.
I read the exclusion when I first took the policy out and I perceived the exclusion to mean that if she was attacked by rats in her mews then that was 'attacked by vermin', but if she sustained a rat or squirrel bite whilst out hunting then this was included in the cover.
Has anyone made a succesful claim with exotic direct for a rat or vermin bite whilst out hunting?
Cheers

I would never use Exotic Direct again if they were the last Company dealing in Insurance for birds. All my birds were covered with them for theft and accidental damage and vets fees, I had a break in and lost £14,500.00 they refused to cover me because there was no one on the premises at the time of the break in even though we had CCTV footage of the actual break in, they told me there had to be someone to monitor the CCTV at all times because it was on our policy that we had CCTV. 1 bird was in our Quarantine Station and they claimed this was not an proper aviary etc etc. I complained to Lloyds who were underwriting the policy and they also refused to cover me or consider the matter any further. I cancelled my policy with them and they also refused to give any refund and sent me a letter canceling my policy as in their view my property was unsecure.
So beware of the small print they know every trick in the book to avoid paying out Wan*ers :toimonst:

Hi Liam.............. Sorry M8 even if the bird dies he will not be covered because he has already admitted that the injury was caused by a rodent and that will be their get out clause, Insuring a bird with this company is a total waste of time, they must have paid out in some cases but if there is a way for them to escape payment they will find it, you might just as well use the money for the policy to have a night out on the town.

They have no morals and are on my Xmas stool list.
A bite form vermin also applies to squirrels and considering they are a popular infliction it is a ***** deal.
This company insists you creamant your bird, To stop you having it stuffed and making any money on it. Exotic will also tell you this infomation the day you report your bird has died...........how very tactful and nice of them:twisted:
Oh also remeber if you bird gets referred to another Vet they will not pay 30% of that vet bill.
Dick turpin is there company mascot.
Golden valley insurance or E and L insurance are the ones to use.

agree in principle but all insurance companies will get out of what thet can, my gos died a few years ago and she was covered by golden valley and they were trying to get out of it!

Golden Valley insurance is the one to go with, there excellent. Last year my harris was bitten by a squirrel, I wasn't going to make a claim, but the visits to the vets increased and so did the fees.
I contacted Golden Valley and they said I should have contacted them within a week of the incident (fair enough). They could have turned round to me and said it was too late, but they didn't. Vet sent the claim form off to them and sorted everything out for me.

Well I've never had any probs. with Exotic Direct; but then again, I would have said a cat bite or something if the paperwork stated vermin!!!!!
Play them at their own game.
In 4 years, I've made 2 claims, 1 was for the HH, which had a mouth complaint and the other was when my Perlin died. Had the payment within a few days on both occaisions.............................
Don't touch Exotic Direct!! (IMHO). Last year, my Harris had an egg inside her the size of a goose egg. Emergency surgery resulted in the removal of the egg, her ovary, oviduct etc.etc.
Neil Forbes did a superb job - as usual. But the bill was nearly £800. I had been paying Exotic Direct for 6 years - £15.78 per month (this included insurance for my other birds as well). They refused the claim, stating they did not cover for any claim involving "the reproductive system". What DO the pay out for??
I am now with Golden Valley. Absolutely first rate. Talk to Sharron - she will see you right. I now only pay £11.75 per month - and that includes my equipment room for damage/theft, as well as vets fees etc. Can't go wrong with them:supz:
It looks as if Golden Valley will be covering my bird once she has got over her wounds.
My vets bill is currently under £100 so I can stand that, but its when you hear of Terry's £14,500 loss that makes you realise just how sly ED are.

hey i have also been coughing up for this exotic direct **** too, i think that i will be changing over too, only thing is, at the time that i was looking for insurance E,D was the only one i could find...... at this rate we will make the comany go bust with so many of us pulling out, he he he he:gib: :gib: :gib:
Most people I know are with Golden Valley and seem happy. Lower excess, vermin bites covered. The only down side I can see is the bird is not covered if bowed out in the garden. But then again I can live with that. Its the 'covered for vermin bites' thats swung it for me.
Kev (Jollyboy) how come ED paid up for Mia when she was tragically bit by a rat when its in the exclusions about injuries etc caused by vermin bites. It would be nice to know so I can use it as a bit of a lever. Maybe the person that processed your claim had a pet rat and didn'y see them as vermin.

gary as far as i can remeber the form was submitted with the true information, that she was bit by a rat that she caught while out hunting rabbits.... they paid out all the vets bills + what she was insure for,,,,excess was about £25 from what i can remember aswell...feel free to drop names and instancies if it helps you, also if you want i might be able to get hold of more detailed info on the claim.
one more thing to remember this was 2 years ago now...and a lot may have changed since then.... i am looking into the policy i have on them now though and would not count out moving policy myself....interesting feed back on this thread
Thanks Kev
Things may well have change since Mia was bit. I've submitted the claim form so I will see what happens.
Cheers

Exotic Direct have paid up. Received a cheque this morning. So a happy ending.
The accompanying letter did state
"Though attack by vermin is not covered under the terms of the policy, the underwriters agreed that in this circumstance the treatment would be covered".
I think I will still change to Golden Valley.
