I , for good or bad , am not a member of any Falconry or Hawking clubs but now it looks like the time when i should consider it .
If you didnt already know there are changes afoot which WILL affect the keeping of birds of prey ( all livestock for that matter) , and notice i'm not talking about hunting , so i would like to know who is conversing with defra at present .
There are many threats to our passion at present and i think we should do all we can to be aware of them , if , for me , this means joining the elite then so be it .
Information welcome .

kind of relying on the campaign for falconry and hawk board to box in our corner, for numbers sake, (pressure) bfc seems to be the main and largest falconry club with fingers in pies me thinks, and are gd at corresspondance.
am organising the selling campaign stuff now through the park!!! tryin to do my bit to help. on a political level its these boys that look out for us so we intern should support them if we can? makes sence.
phone u later gozz

My goodness, it seems that you in the UK are having a constant struggle with your government and "animal rights" wanna-bes in order to merely commune with nature and practice a very environmentally friendly pastime. I wish you all the best and definitely feel for you....

I too would like to know exactly what you are talking about. I have heard nothing from the Hawk Board and there is nothing coming through from the Federation except intended price charges for later this year and a rise again next year.
Please let me know what you mean and I will see if I can get further info

I am already a member of a falconry club that looks after my interests.
It is called the Sole Falconry Club and is aimed at the independent falconer. Membership is limited to one person so I regret the club cannot consider any more applications for membership this year.
I did consider joining several other clubs, but if their standards are so low that they'd have me as a member, I'm not sure I'd want to join.

A federation for all major raptor breeders in the UK, deal closely with DEFRA independently of other groups of orginasations.

I would never join a club, they seem to be to busy telling other members how good they are instead of actually going out practising the sport, but then I only have limited (and not to good) experiance of clubs......

As a farmer DEFRA dos my head in, so I leave it to those with more time, patience, knowledge and clout to fight. Am a British Falconer member cos I keep forgetting to cancel it  and the mags not bad, but it works out expensive. Cheaper to just hit the web site for either of these or LANTRA to see what is going on....or watch this forum (some times)

I think you should offer apologies to Groucho for that one.

Travelling through Derbyshire today listened to early morning programme on BBC Radio Derby, where they said Derby College was starting to run a course on Falconry, to include housing , feeding, flying etc. Which can only be a good thing if the course is suitably detailed with sufficient hands on experience etc.
However they went on to say that it was likely that mandatory training could be required in the future to keep BOP.
Wonder how experienced falconers will stand with this proposed legislation? Will we all need to sit an exam?
Any comments?

The wheels are already in motion with regard to exams. I gather Lantra will be releasing there voluntary exam at the Falconer's Fair next month.

Just checked out the details i heard on Radio Derby and inactual fact the course running at Derby College is merely a falconry experience day in April, so hardly the training we would have expected as the basis of an examined course to satisfy DEFRA. Another token jesture

Is it possible that the Animal Welfare Bill passes the responsibility for checking whether the purchaser of an animal is a suitable owner to the seller? I haven't read the bill.
That would make sense. And some sort of a qualification would be needed to reassure sellers that the purchaser has the necessary knowledge to look after the animal/bird he is purchasing.
If this is the case, is that a good or a bad thing?

Anything which increases the chances of proper/good husbandry and care of BOP as to be a good thing, however passing the responsibility to the seller doesnt ensure this and could leave individuals to be blamed for inadvertently selling to poor keepers.
Think in future anyone with BOP will need to be licenced along with the birds they keep, licencing will include verification that mews and training have been completed to a satisfactory standard.
