Hi,
new to the forums. Im from the Gold Coast of Australia, Surfers Paradise.
I was wondering if anyone knew of the legality of falconry in Australia ?
I am not particularly interested in hunting with the bird.
Thankyou

Hi mate and welcome to the forum. I hope you enjoy your time here! :D

Last time i heard in Australia, although falconry is not specifically illegal, it is illegal to keep any type of bird of prey in captivity. The only exemption is when the birds are kept for purposes of rehabilitation (for which a licence must still be held), circumstances under which the practice can be an effective tool used in returning a bird to health.

I might be wrong now though. Sure some more people willl be along v.soon with more info!

All the best, jamie

I was told the same when I was thinking of emigrating, one of the reasons I did not go!!

Yes, illegal so far as I know.

I had some correspondence with an Aus falconer many years ago. He was so far out in the bush that he didn't bother much with the laws. There are some interesting birds out there. This guy had a Brown Goshawk which seemed to me to be the Aussie version of a Black Sparrowhawk. I nearly packed my bags and emmigrated!

Illegal, although there does now seem to be a shift in attitude towards falconry.
