Found some sites on the net selling leather working tools, awls, needles stitch markers etc. Fancy having a crack at making a lure and one or two other items (clicking my heels waiting). Can someone give a list of the tools needed to have a go, as with no knoledge it can be confusing, what size needles, straight awl or curved etc etc

For a basic lure you will need some leather, a pattern (Roger Uptons book has a basic pattern) saddlers needles (I use size 4), an awl, cotton thread and beeswax or nylon thread, a stitch marker and a revolving leather punch would be useful. You will need something to weight and pad the lure - personally I use 2p coins wrapped in duck tape and then padded out with bandages.
Cut out your pattern, run the stitch marker round, poke the holes with the awl and start stitching. Voila!

Thanks again for the reply ...... perhaps it wasnt a very juicy question, but it was a genuine one(took a while to get a response), no one else could take the time. But a post on minty will have 50 replies to turn the screw or stab the knife. In many ways its a great forum and with a new bird at the right time i think people would help to the best of their ability. However it may be the time of year with birds being put to molt etc that its more of a soap opera than a forum, personalities more than genuine discussion and help. I just feel intimidated to post genuine questions, frankly its easier to turn away. Im ****ed been out all night but still log in to the forum when i get in....suppose thats a bit sad. anyway had a rant, off to bed , am i talking ****, feel free to ...............................

Sorry M8 I often just look at the new posts rather than browse the forum.
Also, TBH it so much easier to show someone how to do leather working than describe it. Unfortunately I havent got any pics of making a lure to hand, but I'll start a new thread on making a glove

Not too sure on the sound of the lire padded with 2p pieces though - no matter how well padded. Accidents can happen, even with the best lure swinger in the world and being hit by a pad full of coins is going to hurt - even well padded it is going to be heavy and solid! I've seen falcons develop bumblefoot from hitting pads too heavy too. I've made a few lures in the past and padded them out with shredded plastic bags - fill the whole of the lure well, don't get heavier when wet, have plenty of "give", not as heavy although enough weight to allow the lure to be swung and a hell of a lot cheaper!!

When I make padded lures I either use woolen saddle stuffing / flock available from any working saddler or you can use kapock(sp)? this is used to stuff soft toys HTH

when I was working at a centre we had a lanner who used to hit lures very hard, my mentor now uses lures made from car wheel innertubes, its heavy enough to not need any extra weight and soft enough not to do any damage if the falcon hits it hard. you cant garnish it with wings though, but our falcons were all display birds.

Just to clarify I have the 'heart' of the lure weighted with the 2ps probably about 14 - 20p worth. The lure isnt FULL of 2ps - give me some credit!! :yawinkle:

Sorry FHF. At least it is clarified now if any beginner wants to make a lure. P.S. The plastic bags work REALLY well, and there is enough weight to aloow the lure to be swung properly
