I am probably what you will all consider to be quite a sad person. I am passionate about birds of prey, especially eagles. I have had extremely limited contact with them by your standards but am hoping that one day I will be in the position to dedicate enough time to owning a bird. With family, work and other commitments that I currently have (and don't begrudge) I just couldn't guarantee the time one of these creatures requires. So I make the most of visiting faclonry centres, and come onto sites like this to read all your experiences with your birds and to become extremely envious of you all - in a good way! I hope this doesn't make me an outcast!
Cheers

Nothing sad about that! The saddo's are the ones who for reasons of vanity or whatever passes amongst them for self esteem. Like to be seen walking about housing estates, whith large impressive looking birds on their arm, perhaps as a substitute for a trophy wife.If more people were like you there would be a lot less irretrievably messed up birds consigned to the For Sale section of Cage & aviery.

Welcome to the forum mate, you are perfectly right not to own a bird until the time is right, there is no question about that. Just wish others would adopt the same attitude.

Thanks to all of you. Quite a reception. I hope to learn as much as I can from all of you so that when the day comes, I will be well versed in keeping a bird. Thanks a lot.

hi Paul,
doesn't seem sad at all, in fact seems pretty sensible! I'm in a similar position; my current lifestyle and job just won't accomodate owning even a goldfish let alone a bop! I'm lucky in that I'm doing a job that I love, so wouldn't change that at all, but it means that I have to be content with learning as much as I can from others and their birds without the actual commitment of having my own. Still can be great fun though!

I think you're right Fiona, it is sensible not to commit to owning a bird until circumstances are right, but the bloody desire is so strong to share a relationship with one of these birds!! Oh well I have waited this long - I'm sure a couple more years won't kill me!:(

Paul,
Have you thought about volunteering your brush beating services to a local falconer? You might want to do that until you can get a bird. If you want to find one close to you just give your location and ask for the nearest club and go to a meeting. Who knows there may even be a falconer on here that would take on a brush beater. This would also give you an opportunity to meet a mentor to help you when you do get your first bird.
Just a thought,
Greg
