What do you say when you call a breeder? and what do you do when you see the bird? eg check feet, feather condition, alertness...

I think this falls into the category of what beginners ask? Hopefully useful too.

If I told you some peoples opening lines to me and some of the questions they ask you would have a fit M8
I am getting quite good at sussing them over the phone now (I think it comes with age) and stop them wasting my time and theirs as well.
I had a 12 year old Kid last year trying to order a pair of White Gyrs from me he said his Dad would pay for them no problem, never had a BOP before but wouldn't even consider anything else, when i refused to supply him he sent me abusive E-mails for months.

lol i don't envy you, i would just hang up. What sort of questions do you like to be asked though? Anything in particular that makes you think they know what they are on about.

Oh and how annoying is it to be asked 'how big are the parents, are they huge..i like huge birds'

I would say one of the first thing to do is normal curtosy, tell who you are, where you got the number from and ask if they have time to talk, to many people phone and say first of all before any intro:
"How much do you sell your gyr/sakers for?"
Second, tell them a bit about yourself ie. your experiance in falconry, what kind of bird you are looking for and what you are planning to use it for. The breeder then know if he have what suits your needs.
Then its up to your own interesst, age of birds, how they are reared, availibility, price etc.
Dont be surprised if some breeders might sound a bit "off", as Terry said 8 out of 10 phone calls seem to be from time wasters, so breeders can be a bit "suspicious" at first, but as we care for our birds and want them to get a good home Im sure that is understandeble.
