I make everything except for bells and swivels (as a girl I was never allowed to do metal working!!) Personally I think that at the very least everyone who owns a bird of prey should be able to make a set of anklets and jesses for their charge. Buying them is the height of lazyness.
What sort of ideas do you want?

I have seen some being made and it looks quite fiddly doing the stitching, but you have to start somewhere.

Would it be worthwhile learning to make your own equipment before being ready to have your own bird? I'm interested in trying to make some equipment based on patterns I'm able to find, in the hopes that having experience working with the tools and materials will help when I do have my own bird.

Depends what you are intending to make; anklets and jesses are pretty straightforward. Only the truly dedicated would want to get into hood and glove making: too much like hard work!!!

CZ: I will gladly show you some pictures......but only when the finished product does not look like a mauled walnut!!!!!!!!!!!
It is a delicate and tricky method, but it is not too complex........................................... .so far..........:supz: :supz: It's the tone that matters and getting that is not so straight forward.

Had a bloke ring us for an OWL HOOD once, told him nobody made them...........he kept pestering us so I said I would see what I could do for him...
I got a kellogs cornflake box, cut an opening in it, put some braces on it and posted it to him.............
A few days later he came on the phone asking what the hell it was..... I said it was the best we could come up with and that he shouldn't moan as kellogs is a good make!!!!

I make jesses, anklets and I'm attempting to make a glove for my daughter, I bought my glove but it doesn't seem sensible to buy her a glove when she will probably outgrow it soon. I was going to attempt a hood for my kes but since griff sells excellent glued hoods for £20 i decided that was a better option lol, I was very impressed with the quality considering the price, think I will leave bells and swivels to the proffesionals too

hi just a killer, would you be interested in making your own bows and post then also? its not hard provided you have the right set up, you dont need a over the top expensive welder either, on the market now you;ve got what is called an inverter, its an arc welder of types but its so simple to use with a weeks practice you'll be building bridges, tell once i could'nt even spell engineer but now i is one, no seriuosly 250 notes would get you this inverter and some welding rods and your away, you can also change the torch so you can weld stainless and alloy, ill let you know how to make a perfect bow also, thats the hard bit but there are ways, have to go for a bit, regards gordon

Stick welder from B&Q will handle up to a 3.2 mm electrode, Stainless or mild steel
(A 2.5mm is ample if not overkill for welding bowperches)
It will set you back £59 plus some welding electrodes.
If you cant learn yourself to weld with it just throw it in the bin, Its cheap enough!

Over the yeasr I have made my own hoods, gloves, bells, jesses, leashes, hawking bags, blocks, perches, tail guards, raptor restraints, strait jackets, do-gaza nets, flight nets, clap nets, perch traps, padams, noose harnesses, and a myriad of other falconry and trapping equipment. The only thing I did not dabble in was swivels. Something are better left to the specialists.

Exellent point, I never realy looked at it like that.
Striking up a stick is second nature to me, Its easy to forget how hard stick welding was in the beginning :yawinkle:
