3 clutches is not that uncommon and amounts to virtuall all year round breeding. however sometimes "winter" young get problems with lack of daylight causing all sorts of problems including deformities. sprout would describe this better than i can. its actually a bit of a problem with quite a few h/hawks! dont know what to do about it really?

My breeding pair breed all year round and they even lay when there are young in the aviary.I have also seen one lot of young help feed the newly hatched chicks.

Well I have a pair of harrises and they also breeded every year about two or three clutches but last year I had nothing But they did mate a lot (or how do you say). Now this year looks the same again they are mating (or again how do you say :) ) from the middle of january but still no egg. But they do go in the nest! I'm starting to think that It's maybe throught the tawny eagles. everytime somebody goes outside the tawny eagles start to scream and when the harrises are on the nest they go off then. I can see this from the camera inside. Anybody got some ideas of what i could be maybe?

Hi Gunther,

Is your female Harris old and had loads of eggs? I had a Lanner that I double clutched for years and then she ran out of eggs. There was no signs of this happening - 8 out of 8 the year before then she stopped and never laid another. Even with no eggs I could put young in with her though and she would rear them.....

Hi

The female harris is getting thirteen years this year and she had loads of eggs. Every year she had at least two clutches and there was one year when she had three clutches. Do you think that she ran out of eggs? That would look very strange to me because I didn't even knew that that would be possible. But maybe you could be right because sometimes she is sitting in the nest for a time like she would lay an egg and when I then think she will have laid an egg she stands up and nothing there. But then again thirteen years doesn't seem to me that old or am I wrong?

Sounds like it to me. My female Lanner did everything, copulate sit etc, etc but never laid another egg. She was also around 13 yrs when she stopped.
Birds having a pre-determined number of eggs for their lifetime is mentioned in Nick Fox's 'Understanding the bird of Prey book'.
