New member to this forum...but have been flying birds off and on since 1964. I'm in Kentucky, USA, near Cincinnati, Ohio. Mostly enclosed farmland, so have worked mostly shortwings. Did try a peregrine tiercel, but terrain just isn't right. A couple of other hawkers and I have recently taken on admin of a breeding co-op that will allow us to import spars, so I'm here to seek advice and info from any successful breeders. Hoping the avian flu doesn't throw a big wrench in the works before we get some spars for the project.

Thanks for the welcome!
Regarding the spar project, we just now are getting legal approval under the US Wild Bird Conservation Act to import spars for breeding, so next step will be to locate spars to import. Will likely get our first birds from breeders in Canada, avoiding the quarantine issue, and will fly them using falconry methods for their first year. Then in to the breeding chambers they go. Plans will be to get chamber/parent raised birds, since we don't really want to go the ai route next year. I'll be posting some specific questions for spar breeders on the breeder thread...
In so far as comparing spars to our native birds (Coopers and sharpies), I've been told that the spars are much more like our sharpies, but are a bit more tenacious in the chase. Generally, the male spar seems to be a tad smaller than a female sharpie, while the female spar is larger than the sharpie, approaching a male Coopers in size. Looking forward to working out the spar style on the local sparrow/starling crowd.

Welcome to the MadHouse aka the IFF. I hope you find all the answers to your questions here and you should get some first class answers from some of our members.
Incidentally Imprinted Spars will breed naturally and in general I used to get much better results from Imprinted pairs than I ever did from chamber raised more of this later when you start your thread
Welcome
