As some of you are aware, i tore ligaments in my ankle about three weeks ago whilst out with my harris.
I bought a pair of wellies from a shop on the net, and they were slip-proof, hard wearing and all the other adjectives i was looking for .

I had worn them before whilst out, and fell, stumbled and slid from fallen trees, so im wondering !

Who claims to have the best footwear for hawking ?

Ive just bought barbour boots, they look great, quite high, ankle support(essential), speed laces and goretex/waterproof - but will i still fall my length when vaulting a fallen wet tree?

Whats the best?

I am a true wellie girl!

I used to wear good walking boots but often found that I was in water or mud deeper than the ankles - not nice! Either that or I would get soaked cleaning baths and pens - maybe I am just a messy worker! Anyway, I splashed out on Le Chameau neoprene lined, full length zip wellies and haven't looked back. They are WELL worth the money they cost. They fit brilliantly (measured on the calf and the foot for perfect fit). They are warm, supportive (even better than my walking boots), well soled and allow you to wade deeper into water and mud without getting wet!

got wellies and boots

prefer the boots as they offer more support and they are a damn sight warmer too
the boots were fairly cheap (i am an aberdonian remember ) but are waterproof and have thinsulate so are not too bad :supz:

I have a pair of le chameau boots good support and comfortable well worth the price tag and they last for years add a pair of gaiters and your well away.
I have also got a pair of leather lined full length zipp le chameau wellies these are great aswell but I prefer the boots espically when on the Moor. The only down side is there made by the french. LOL

I had to gloss over the French bit myself - well they have to be good at something other than bread I suppose

go for the full length zip nice and easy to get of after a hard day in the field plus they give more support. You get them from Jonh Norris in Penrith.

Not sure if this is the cheapest but this is the link

http://www.bestboots.co.uk/

I for one have Barbour Wellies for the wettest areas and also have two different type of military boot (handy being in the RAF, lol) One is the standard uk issue and the other is a goretex cold weather boot degined for extreme cold weather. Bloody fantastic boot and even better it's free, yeah.

A good pair of cheap leather boots, and the cheapest wellingtons around (Nora is a good make). A waste of money buying anything expensive as they're soon torn and holed by barbed wire, especially "Hunters" in my opinion, which are far too soft to stand up to hard work. If they last me the season, I consider they've done well.

not read through the rest on here but a good goetex boot with around a 10" heal to give you support in rough terrain would be a good bet. I must admit to being a zip up wellie man but like a very tight fit around the ankle area for support.

i hope they last, but ive got weak ankles, im forever goin over on it so i need to spend a bit more and get some good support, and also in my experience if you buy cheap you buy twice

i have had meindl boots for years, a full time scottish hill stalker put us,(me and my mates) on to them, he tried every boot in the world and the only ones that lasted more than one season in rough heather and harsh weather were meindl boots, some of the others he tried only lasted a few weeks. but these were tested in the toughest of environments.

i,ve got a pair of gore tex berghaus boots, they are great as long as it is not too wet, if you get into some long grass or into those reedy watery bits where the rabbits usually hide yuo usually end up with soggy tootsies, think i,ll get a pair of wellies this year for lowland hawking.

I wear bucklers steel toed boots through the summer always building stuff and it stops the wife stampping on my toes when I'm not listening or a set of caterpillars at displays they usually last at least 2 yrs and the tread goes before the uppers.
In the winter I wear neoprene lined aigle wellies they rock good solid grips hard wearing uppers barb wire bounces off them and I have had them on for the last two days in the snow and ice with a pair of sports sock and my feet are still toasty. Best of all they have buckles on the side in sheep country they are essential:wink:

i would have to say a good pair of boots, wellies however good they are for keeping your feet dry offer very little to no support for your ankles.
The last thing you need when being out is having another accident on an already weakened ankle, next time you may not be able to hobble/limp back.

Steve,

Its Le Chameau Mouflon boots that I wear (thats when Ive not got wellies on !), bought them about 7yrs ago and the're still good.

I remembered when I first got them I didnt have to go through the pain barrier until they got broken in. Think I paid £70 for them. Oh yeah, that was EACH !

Cheapest I seen them for recently was on Ebay from a seller called classicsforever123, he does a lot of Le Chameau gear.

The Mouflon Plus are an extra £20 and are 2" higher I think.

Brilliant footwear. I have weak ankles and big calfs (too much football as a youngster  ) and they fit perfectly at ankles, calf and foot. Cost me £155 but well worth the money. Brilliant in the snow too - toasty warm:)

I had a similar problem last season with boots and was looking for something better, http://www.falconryforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=8829

Ended up going for the le chameau neoprene lined full zip welly and they're well worth the money. they're very comfortable, warm, waterproof, have stood up to all the brambles and barb wire i've faced so far. Superb, well worth investing in a pair.

I have a pair of cheap Dunlop wellies for very wet under foot places (or if it's been raining a lot recently), Llidl's £14.99 steel toe hiking boots when the weather is dry and firm, and a pair of Tchibo thermal boots when its bloody cold. They are like a short welly with a thermal fleece inner boot.
If a person is comfortable in trainers so be it, each to their own:rolleyes:
