View Full Version : Handling Forum Threads

Can we see how the members feel threads should be handled by the moderators?
I feel a thread belongs to the initial poster, that coupled with the title is put in an appropriate place on the forum in its correct section.
Now if someone comes along and cocks it up and either goes off topic by a long way, mods can split the thread and start up a new one from that.
A bit of friendly called for playful chat may seem OK but can kill a thread. You know the one line banter cracks that lead to turmoil, squabbling and personal outbursts. Not say no joking or banter, they can be included if appropriate and friendly in an accompanied relevant posting too, surely?
OK so all this considered and what you may have to add let see how the offending posts are to be dealt with?

All really offending posts should be, in my opinion, either amended or deleted.
Chit chat should be remained either in the Chat room which is at our disposal, the Club18 or Club17 forums etc. Not in the thread created by someone asking for advice etc...

I feel that they should be deleted!!!!!!

I think the only way to stop these posts is to hand out temporary bans (1 week?) to those who hijack a thread or deliberately post to wind up others.
People will soon get the idea

I think you should ask them to remove it. If they refuse to, or fail to, delete it. Perhaps repeat offenders who refuse to remove it should be banned or blocked from posting for a period of time increasing with each offense?
Mr_Colin
14-03-2006, 01:50 PM
I think the posts should be deleted and the orginator informed as to why, either in the thread or Pm so hopefully it will make them think. If people get too personal maybe we should have a 3 strikes and a temp ban for a week. Just image the amount of posts they would have to sift through after a week.

obviously disruptive posts being deleted is fine, but now posts are being deleted everywhere! whats the point? I have a read a thread, and hour later it is unrecognisable. All threads go off topic and usually go back, but just deleting every imperfect post is ridiculous...

To give them a chance to do it themselves, and to make them think about what they're posting. The best way to moderate is to encourage people to self-moderate :)

i'd agree, if the posts are offensive abusive, just plain pointless and going off topic then something needs to be done to stop it.
My only worry would be that we loose some of the banter which makes alot of the posts entertaining as well as informative. Some nights I have been crying with laughter and picking up useful info. Where do we strike the balance?

That's very negative thinking CZ, let's try and get something positive going here, negativity never built anything. We have a chance to say how the forum is run, let's take advantage of it and make it a better place. :yawinkle:

totally agree!! that is what the mod are for though! its it is truely offensive get it off staight away .... if it is just going off thread a quiet posting from the mods should bring it back on line..... for my opinion most seem to be doing a great job:P

this is a toughie, imo it depends on the actual content of post, if abusive etc then delete it leave a note saying deleted and pm the person and author of thread to let them know,
if just just contains swearing through humor etc then edit and pm both parties.

I say just delete it, people should know better.

If mods are looking after their own area's then surely their work load has already been reduced. If I was a mod I would have a Mods template set up so I can just edit name and subject matter and post on, not too difficult to arrange as you mods are all inteligent people. Maybe Sparrow can organise a way for mods to have a pm template base to call upon when the needs arise.
Just my thoughts.

I think you'll find that once people realise there is the threat of being banned the amount of work for the mods will magically reduce ( lets face it if the offenders are banned they cannot take up any of the mods time for the cool-off period ;) )

Answer is to put a temporary lock on the thread, pm, then unlock and monitor.

But how can you expect to make your job easier if you don't allow people to learn to regulate themselves? People will soon learn to stop and think before they hit the submit button IF you allow them to.

I think the mods should PM the individual requesting the offensive comment etc be removed immediately if they are online. If not then by all means remove the item but tell the individual concerned it has been removed via a PM.

If you go down the route of asking the offender to remove..... how long are your going to give them????? this sounds like it could be difficult to police! and yet more work for the mods.... taking it off with an automated warning would be easier and more practicable.

:D
the best way i've seen is for mods to themselves quickly edit the post, removing the offensive comment and leaving a note for the poster in it's place
eg.
"********** comment deleted **********
poster please do not continue in this thread or be banned."
This way there is no delay with PMs etc.

If people can't reply to a thread without getting personal and giving derogartory comments then they should keep their comments to themselves...............
If someone disagrees with a thread that is fine..but disagree in an adult way ............all the slagging off that goes on helps no-one and takes away the topic that should have been discussed.
This forum should be about those needing to learn receiving help from those with the experience to help them.....Also those with GOOD knowledge and experience imparting it to people so that they can progress in falconry.
All the ****** comments from people should be deleted straight away.
Everybody should bear in mind that they had to start at the beginning in falconry and needed help to do it.........Lets help them that are starting out now and are joining the forum to get help........
After all it is up to the individual to either take the advice given or discard it.
If a thread is posted and it is deemed to be a load of ***** and detrimental to the forum just delete it.......... That is up to the moderators to sort out...
So lets help those that need it ( and that's all of us from time to time, nobody knows it all) and have a bloody good forum and cut out all the ******** and backbiting, otherwise there is no point in being on here.......
That's what I think anyway!!!!

I think your right in a way but god i think we should be able to post something funny every now and then ,i think your going to politically correct .
you,ll lose a lot of people who come on everyday just to browse and put the odd dissaproving comment or some funny or even disaggreeing comments on ,so you want people to take comments off people who dont have a clue on how to keep birds properly ,everyone has different opinions and people need to choose what they thinks right ,

Nobody saids you can't have a laugh Johnny as long as it is part of the thread and is not just banter for banters sake?
We want to keep personal attack against people out to like the one you made to Yarak1 calling him a Muppet. Now I know you and would only laugh it off, he is obviously intelligent enough to know you are joking too, but others may not and this is how trouble starts. So we all just need to think how our posts will affect others.

Ive read this post right through now and cannot believe that yet again an all out war has started. I can see that the thread by Yarak starts out with a very simple message about how he percieves the forum from the time he has spent on it. Its not hard to understand how he feels like this considering how he became involved with this forum in the first place. His business was directly attacked with the use of third hand incorrect and misinformed allegations and he felt it necessary to join the forum and redress the situation. I think if the tables were turned there would be some on here that would do much more than what he has done. Sometimes we have to remember that not all on here are private individuals and that some do make a living from their interests. If someone was trying to take away my living I would fight back also.
I have to be honest now and say that the fun has gone from this forum because of all the fighting going on. This is by no means the fault of the MODs. We are all adults and should be able to recognise all this. If I was a beginner coming into this tradition and I came onto this forum I would have second thoughts about getting involved altogether. Fortunately I have seen how falconry should be in terms of meeting and learning from decent people who care about how it is portrayed to the uninitiated.
I think its about time now that we had some decent banter with a bit of falconry inbetween.
By the way Big Joe Joe, when is the wedding do? I need a good night on the ****.

there are a lot of bickering threads on here, there are also lots of threads that are utter sheeite, if they do your nut in so much then copy and paste the url and send it to any of the mods.
I f you send me a thread and i read it, AND it appears to be a crock, I'll delete it! cant say fairer than that!

All really offending posts should be, in my opinion, either amended or deleted.
Chit chat should be remained either in the Chat room which is at our disposal, the Club18 or Club17 forums etc. Not in the thread created by someone asking for advice etc...

I think it's fine just the way it is. Why try to fix somthing that aint broke? There are always going to be some issues that crop up that are off thread but it gets dealt with most of the time. How far do we go with change is it heading towards Big Brother on a public forum? I dislike the thought of being stopped for somthing I may disagree on and I disagreeing my way.
Are we going to move on and have a falconry forum template that tells us the wording of your sentence dosn't fit the bill you cant post that. Come on its a good forum the way it is why are people being so negative about it?
Cheers Joe

Well folks, I have been an admin on my own site and I am now a Mod on here. You won't see me randomly deleteing post, but you will see me try to curb a thread that has gotten to the point of being offensive to a majority. Fact is, you can't please everyone, all you can do is try to please as many at a time as you can. All the folks on here just bi***ing about the way the forum is, understand that we could do everything you want, but that would one serve to make someone else bi**h about it. Remember, we are all volunteers here and we are NOT able to do evrything on our own. We the mods and admins, need everyones help to keep this fantastic forum running as smooth as possible.
Thanks,
Weasel
