Hi, I´m John. I live in Denmark, and I´m planning to get a Harris´ Hawk this summer. I´m just starting to build the aviary (6+4+3meters). I´d like to make it as widemeshed as possible, but I´m not sure what would be the maximum width? Is 10x10cm too far out? (I have welded steel in mind) If any of you have a clue I´d be glad!
I´m sad to say that we had the first case of the aviflu yesterday -a buzzard was found dead.
Cheers :) , John

Hello and welcome to you there John!
I would go for bars instead at about 60mm apart.

Solid sides with a front comprising of verticle bars would be a better option.

Dont use mesh, it will ruin your hawks feathers!

Hi There John and welcome to the Forum to learn from.
I am at the moment going to change from wire mesh to rods, and the rods that I will be getting are 12mm solid aluminium, as I have found recently that the Heras fencing wire that I have been using for the last few years has been ok til just recently and I did have my Hawk hurt his foot and I can only put that down to him grabbing the wire.
If I have the right Image posted this is the wire that I am about to replace.
Albie..

and thanks for the helpful replies. It seems that vertical bars will be the thing to go for. What about the top/roof though (half will be fully covered, but I´d like som air and light comming through! Is there any danger in using the mesh up there:?:
The googlemap should show my lokation now.
Thanks again!

Best to put bars there also mate. I use mesh and bars. The mesh is about 4 inches out from the bars. The bars are to keep the bird in and the mesh is to keep critters out.
Oh.....and welcome to the forum.

Here is what the Bars look like on my mews. Greg puts wire mesh over these, but I have not.

The mews looks dark inside?

That is easy to over come.
Half covered, half open or use transparent skylight sheets.
Remember different, people need different types of mews in different countries, because of different situations and climatic conditions.

Make provision to completely cover the roof though - especially if you have avian flu present!

A very good piece of advice!
