I have seen i few pictures of a hawk flying between to perches whilst out weathering I would like to try it myself but not quite sure how to put it together and if it is safe. Does any one do it or does any one know how? and if it is a good idea?

Thanks Mike

Put in the site search engine trolley system.

Yes Mike it is a very good idea if you have the room for it. Somewhere in the archives is a thread that explains and shows what you are looking for.

It is the trolley system and is used to great success by Jack Merlin on this forum

Also used them in South Africa, but then I had space!

There are things I found you should be aware of, like making sure the hawk could only fly as far as those two points. A triangluar shed or type of weathering on each end it the best, it also protects from the sun out there.

You must trust your gear 110%

I may be wrong here but I think Hells99 uses this method.
Or it could be Hannah.

Try http://www.themodernapprentice.com

Here are a few additional points:

(1) My set up with two A frame "huts" as on the above site stops the birds over flying the ends, then being brought up short, which would obviously be dangerous.

(2) An advantage with this design of hut is that if the hawk tries to land on the hut roof (which it might do if the leash is a little too long or the "stop" on the wire in the wrong position) it just slides harmlessly down the side of the roof.

(3) I see some enterprises person is already selling the components for the trolley on the Internet! He is offering twisted wire rope for the tensioned wire. I would strongly advise against this and to use plain high tensile fencing wire as the twisted rope variety will cut through the running link like a knife through butter.

I have had one gos on my set up for over four years without a single broken feather. Another which arrived here with only one intact tail feather (damage caused by bating from a bow perch) has since moulted out on the trolley and remains feather perfect. Both hawks fly along the wire to the fist every day for feeding in spite of being massively over-weight.

Once again I must repeat that it is absolutely essential to make sure there is no way anything can get snagged -- because if it can, it will. Having said that, I believe this is one of the safest systems yet devised.

The trolley system is used a lot in Germany! Also some portable setups that can be set up in some minutes and moved if required. There are also some rought explanations and pictures in "falknerei" horst schoeneberg if i am correct.

Most BOP's like the trolley setup a lot. Some perches and bath around the setup and indeed at both ends some place to sit.

I used it for my hh all the time. Very good system. Moulted her on it as well. Good to keep a bit fiter during moulting. Easy to clean and needs less space then an aviary.
