Hi iam new to falconry, when the time comes to buy all the bits and pieces you need is it better to get a beginers kit or just buy it all seperatly. :?: :?:

I have been told to stay clear from the kits, and buy what you can't make.

Dex,
Find someone close to you and ask for help in making what you need. I am sure if you ask on here someone will give you a hand. It is much more rewarding to be able to make what you need rather than just putting down the plastic.

hear hear, I keep myself sane by making (or at least trying to) some of the more complicated equipment as I dont have my own bird yet. My hoods are alright, a bit tricky to learn tho. The rest of the stuff - leashes, jesses, anklets etc - are all very easily made. If you make them yourself you know they're up to snuff too, and not just the cheapest available to make money of beginners. Grab yourself a couple of books and learn - its fun!

I think it is imperative that you learn how to make the most important parts of your own kit. What happens if your stuff fails and you need something on the quick. There is no such thing as a beginners kit, and the ones who sell such stuff want there arses kicking. A person who does his homework and learns the CRAFT before getting a bird, will need exactly the same type and amount of kit as those who have been flying for 10 years. Find someone to teach you, go and get loads of leather and other bits in and have some fun. Falconry is not just about having a bird but being able to do everything capable of keeping that bird.
