Hi all
I am a falconer from India, currently employed with a Travel Agency in Dubai -Emirates. I am more of an austringer, and flown shikras, spars. The bigger birds I have flown are crested hawk eagles and Bonellies. The only falcon I have enjoyed flying are the red headed merlins.. Great birds to fly as they fly off the fist and seldom gain height and wait on. They are very fast on the wing and tail chase beautifully.
The quarry we used to hunt with the smaller raptors are largely qualis, mynahs, patridges, grouse and larks. With the larger raptors we used to hunt storks, peacocks, hares and a few ducks.
My friend and I would trap and train our birds. After a few months of good hunting we would hack our birds back to the wild. Since we always trapped passage birds, we never had a problem hacking them back to the wild. Also there is never a dearth of birds to trap and hence we always release our birds back. I have no birds at the moment as I donot have the time to fly one now.
But the falcons here in Dubai on sale are really out of the world.
Stay in touch. Will host a few pictures of the birds I had flown,;) ;-)

Hi Sandeep Welcome to the IFF I hope you will enjoy your time here with us.
Would you please fill in your Profile so we have a little infomation about you for the future.
I hope you enjoy your time in the UAE they are friendly people and I am sure when you meet some local Falconers they will invite you out to see their birds hunting later in the year when things start to happen there, If not come to the Abu Dhabi Exhibition in September and I will introduce you to some good Falconers who will help you and take you out with their birds, Have a look at my website and you will see some nice hunting trips.
Would you also please pin your location to the Googlemap (http://www.falconryforum.co.uk/VBGooglemap.php) you will find it in the blue bar at the top of the page.

I´ve mostly seen kites in India. Once one caught at pidgeon just in front of me, outside a café! It came out of the sky, and into the narrow street. I was really amazed by their numbers in the north. Are kites used in falconry?
I´ve also seen lots of eagles and vultures in the Himalayas, by only high above.
All the best

Hi John
There are tons of kites in India more so in the metropolitan cities as they scavange in the garbages. I have seen at least a 100 at one time when the local poultries dump chichen waste. These are predominantly black kites hat we call pariah kites. I have been to Banagalore often and have in one place seen about 50 -70 brahiminy kites. Pretty birds and are more prone to fishing than other raptors ( excluding ospreys and other sea eagles ).
Hunting kites with sakers used to be a great sport in this part of the world.;)

Thanks for all the info. I have updated my profile. I will definitely be in AUH this september. Is it the Hunting exhibition you are talking about? I had been to this last september with a Pakistani friend/falconer. He is also a great guy and flies sakers and Gos hawks. Do you know of any place in UAE that I could get a spar??
Thanks

Hi Terry
Do you know of anyone breeding / selling spars in UAE ????
Hi Sandeep..........Sorry the Spar is not a bird that is used for Hunting in the UAE and in my oppinion would not be a suitable bird for hunting there.
In answer to you other question yes I mean the Arab Hunting Expo in September. Look forward to seeing you there but we may have met last year at my stand

Hi Terry
I am aware that the locals only fly falcons.... There are Pakistani delares through whom I could have normally got my spar. Due to the current bird flu... the dealers have not been importing. My friend had bought Goshawks, european spars and Bonellis from the UAE bird market. But all this was about 7-9 Years back.
Looking forward to seeing you in september...:)

Hi Sandeep.........If you can get one of the Forum Members to supply you with a Spar we can take care of the shipping for you for you but with the new charges it is costing us around £250 per bird to ship them to Abu Dhabi now plus the cost of the bird. I do think you would be better with a Falcon in the UAE but that is up to you.

Hi Pradeep,
I live in Abu Dhabi----not too far away from you! I frequent the local bird market, but haven't seen any accipiters for the last couple of years. I see a lot of kestrels and hobby falcons in the pet stores, and only large falcons in the falcon shops. But unfortunately no sparrowhawks.
Having said that, I have seen several wild sparrowhawks during migration season. You could probably trap one if you watch out for them and are prepared!
There are plenty of places in the UAE where you could fly sparrowhawks. There are a lot of oasis and forested areas if you know where to look. And I don't know about Dubai, but we have a serious population of quail in Abu Dhabi at this time of year.
I used to see tons of sparrowhawks in the bird markets in Saudi Arabia, as well as chanting goshawks, eagles, hobbies, lanners, barbaries, peregrines, sakers, luggers and just about everything that migrates through this area.
I would love to fly a red-headed merlin some day. Are they easy to come by in India? How did you get yours?
Let's see each other sometime.
Regards,
Mark
