Has anyone ever tried to spray their birds jesses and leases with bitter bite to stop them picking at them. Do you think it would be dangerous??? I am watching her pulling at her jesses and lease to the point it is like a comedy sketch almost pulling herself of her perch. Our male as never even looked at his, is it a female think or just the nutty birds:lol:

Jakki I do not think it will work as I am sure their taste buds do not work like humans, and I am sure saliva needs to be present?

If you discover something I'd be very interested to know...although I don't know what the hell it would take to stop mine attempting to work her way through a leash....too damn clever for her own good..and mine!

hawks are thought to have quite good taste buds although the things they eat they may like the spray!

Hawks can taste, there is no doubt about that.
If you have reservations about your hawk chewing through the jesses then use stronger leather :yawinkle:

I know she will not bite through her jesses more to discourage her knocking herself of her perch even though it is funny to see. She pulls them by the knot and pulls them all the way out then starts tugging the swivel which is stainless steel so she shouldn't be able to bite through that;-)

I have had the same problem before, the bird just kept biting and trying to swallow jesses and leash. She wouldn't stop and it herted her beak quite badly. I have tried bitter better from canopy. It wouldn't work. I solved the problem by not tying her when not flying and after flying I just put her back in her mew.

She is flying every day now and that has resolved the problem. She was probably just keen to go and fly. We take them flying like walking the dogs the birds love it and we love watching them.
