View Full Version : Tail Bells and Telem on HH

Harris

I was just wondering how many people "Bell" their HH, do you do both legs, or 1 leg and tail, or both legs and tail? If you bell the tail, what type of mount do you use, also does anyone use telem with a HH? I would be interested to hear others views and opinions on this before I start to buy new kit for next season.

what size bells do use m8 and what weight is your bird? I have been given a fair bit of conflicting advise on this, and tho there are no hard and fast rules, it will give me more info on which to make up my mind.

Thanks

I normally use both; Noble 5's on the legs via bewits and 1 Noble 9 on the tail. My mHH is around 1lb. 7oz. +/-

My Saker just has leg bells.

Cheers folks, that clears things up a little for me, I was intending both legs and tail bells with telem using a plectrum. I seen a plectrum on ebay, with both mounts and your phone no. embossed into it, which I think is a good idea. still wondering what size bells to use tho, any thoughts?

Some people I know use 2 smaller bells on the tail, no.1's but I like to hear mine.
Sounds a bit like a Morris dancer in the enclosure but at least I know where he is.:supz:

I use a tailmount which takes both the bell (at the top) and the telemetry.

I find this works for me - as I just pop the bell and the tag off at the end of the days hawking.

I use Noble bells (No 3). My Harris hunts at around 2lb 9.5oz

Hope this helps.

I use the same system, although the bell stays on all the time.

Tailmount plectrum for bell and telem on our male. Which is great for thick cover when you call his name he always wags his tail feathers. We walked past him lots of times, once stood about 6" from him couldn't see him till he wagged. The leg ones tend to sound on lift off or if they stomp. we have put a leg one on the female we have with us at the moment but will be getting a plectrum fitted to her too. When I ordered the black bells from pels bells they just asked what bird it was for and sent the bells. I have ordered Noble size5 for next season for our male and size 7 for the female incase we still have her.

tail bells sound quite complex to fit to me.

in the book they allways show the example pictures by putting it on two feathers that aen't attacched to the bird.

so mabey i could do that and practice.

My HH's wear bells and transmitter on bewits.I got the bells from Ben Long who sized them for me.I feel its a bit cumbersome for the birds but they both seem unhappy with tail mounted gear and end up pulling out their deck feathers.Last season i experimented with mounting the bells from the top corners of the anklets but I dont think they wring as loudly, and for a deaf old pensioner like me that is a handicap.

Mass,
I use them for Eagles, falcons and the gos.Never had any problems.
You can fit them in seconds with no need to cast the bird.
Regards.

Tail mount the bell on a plectrum. Theres always a shake of his tail. if hes on a kill that i didnt see, and call him theres normally a ring in the air from his bell. Telem well im 1 of the daft ones. Bought the bio track system but never use it. During the day when hes sitting outside the workshop and he looks as though he wants to go i just take him on the spur of the moment no matter what time it is so telem tends to be the last thing on my mind.

Tail mounted bell & transmitter for me. I don't favour leg mounted transmitters. In the event of the ariel getting itself wrapped round a fence at speed, all the bird stands to loose is her decks, which will obviously re-grow. I've yet to hear of a hawk growing another leg.

fires59 does that mean you'll have three bells on?!! sorry just had a picture of a hh morris dancing through the trees ha ha!! i use 1 bell mounted on a the tail on a plectrum with a marshalls mount. its a noble bell but cant remember what size off the top of my head i always try and use the smallest i can if that makes sense!! just a word of caution to the guys buying a premade plectrum type mount that they dont take all types of telemetry! i bought one at the fair last year and i couldnt fit my marshalls tail transmitter to it!!

use a leg bell and a tail bell myself, and telemetry ofcourse on a tail mount with the bell - initially only put a tail bell on but she pulled it off so with a leg bell on also it took her attention off the tail long enough for her to get used to it. no worries now.

my first season i had no tellem, so i had 2 x leg bells and a tail bell, the last season i did'nt get out much but reduced the hard ware to one leg a tail and a telem transmiter, next season she'll be wareing a tail bell only with provision for a tellem transmiter in the tail mount, to be fair, the bells do my head in when ferreting off the fist, she would always bate at the wrong time and put the dampers on the whole thing, i did concider not using bells at all, untill one day i whent into a wood looking for her after a rare failed flight, i whent to the point of entry stood and listened, called out and wandered about, just as i was starting to worry,i whent back to the point of entry and i heard her tail bell, there she was about a foot above my head hieght at the spot where i'd started the search, points! 1. leg bells can be irritating when ferreting. 2. leg bells won't always give the birds position away, so the leg bells can go for me, generaly a tail bell can be heard regardless if the bird has took stand in a tree or is on a kill my bird can't resist shakeing her ass.
at the end of the day if i have problems i can always stick a leg bell on her later. but for my covert type hunting of the coney the leg bells have got to go.

hi I use tail and leg bells plus telemetry but I am deaf as a post and need all the help I can get the one thing I would not be without is the telemetry as star offten goes from one side of a field to the other if she see,s something and if she kill,s would have a hell of a job finding her without telemetry as there is a lot of setaside were i hunt /dave

I dont believe that telemetry has come down in price at all in the 15 years I have been in the sport. Technology has got better, and cheaper....telemetry has got better, but not cheaper. I guess thats the problem with being a niche market.
