When we had the bird flu scare in southern BC (was not H5N1), even though chickens were sold, chicks were not available. We bought butchered old bulls from nearby farms and fed a lot of beef that year, also rabbit and adult chickens from Vancouver island where there was no flu scare.

Surely if you had but one bird wholesale beef roasts would serve the purpose? Along with whatever the bird catches for variety, of course.
