I have many different types but my most widely used are these................

dirt cheap, very sharp and if you should lose it, what the hell. They also keep a good edge providing you only slit the skin and don't keep cutting the bone.

That is a nice knife!
Also i find opinel ( i think thats how you spell it) very good knifes. They are cheap and have a very good blade. many the same features as the knife sakar-sucker has shown us.

my favourite right now is a small folding gerber knife. It has a spring and its like a flick knife and dead useful one handed. I also love the ford knives, extremely cheap and sharp. Buy 1/2 dozen at a time and then when you lose them and they get dull forget about them.

I use whitby knives in the field as if I lose them theres no great hardship.

When I started out in falconry I was advised to use opinel - until I met someone who had chopped the top of their finger off with one which had closed on it due to not having rotated the metal ring that stops it from closing. Its extremely difficult to close the metal ring one handed I found and I stopped using them at that point.

I have a stunning puma knife, which is not used for hawking - I would be devistated if I left that one in the field!!

I use a Little Lap Puuko.

The blade is fixed at just over 3 inches and the handle fits my hand well.
Not to big and it holds its edge well.

I really like nice quality knives and I'm in agreement with the Buck enthusiasts. I did lose a Buck once which gutted me, forgive the pun, because it was the first present I ever had from the other half. I then thought I'd try opinol but just can't get along with them; I've got a couple of medium range price knives, one of which is a Gerber but I do like Buck. Every so often I just cruise the Heinnie Haynes website and looke at the serious knives on it, many of which have got to be collectors items....I drop lots of hints but nothing has arrived gift wrapped yet! I also lurk around Moonraker Accesories at Game Fairs and usually manage to come away with something or other, I don't think you can have too many knives even if you are most comfortable with one in particular.

Once the knife has seen some use and provided it is kept clean, I have never had any trouble rotating the lock ring when using the knife one-handed; the thumb can move it. Opinels take a superb edge with a little work and are great value.

i bought a knife from the falconry fair last year it was a lock knife and the blade was 3.2 inch,s long i was pulled over while lamping with the gun in the car arrested and given a caution because the blade was over 3 inch and it locked and the knife confiscated my solicitor said if i didnt take a caution i would get done at court as a tree surgeon she represented had been done previously they said because the knife was in my car it was classed as a public place

maybe you should wear it then, when being frisked by the police they asked if i had any weapons on me. told them about the buck on my belt. they took it out looked at it and gave it back, and that was after being pulled over from reports of having a fire arms:confused:

it made me laugh as the police officer stated that having the knife in the car if somone seen it they would or could take offence it was in the glove box when he found it i said they would be more worried looking at the gun in its case on the back seat to this he had no answer but cautioned me

Good men :supz:

I wont have anything sharp near my bird, I heard of a male HH that footed the knife some fool was despatching with last year!
It bled to death in about 30 seconds.

I despatch with a blunt spike and smash bits off the kill with my blade, I say smash because you could ride bare aresd to hell and back on it

Here is my knife.

Remember that size does not figure and its not the edge on your knife but the sharpness of your wit that counts :yawinkle:

Here in Germany, we usually use knifes that are only sharp at the tip of the knife.
With this simple adjustment we avoid that the hawk might cut himself in case of grabbing the knife.

Here is a picture of such a knife.
