so y u think it was so under weight and is it a good idea releasing it as it has had a close call already dnt u think it best to keep it then at least it will survive

nope! that would be illeagal! will have to see what vet says. If she has an underlying problem that has caused her to struggle to hunt then she may have to stay. If I kept all of the birds that came in that were hungry I would have 1000s! Seems a bit cruel to keep her, she is wild and not apprciating my company! If she turns out to be suitable for realse she will be hacked back and that should hopfully help her on her way. if not then yes I will keep her.

There are actually quite a few pairs of wild pere's around here now. Quail would be better, rabbit is nutritionally poor for a falcon in low condition. Good luck with her though

Yes, see them fairly regularly - 3 pairs within 4 miles of my current house and used to be able to watch a pair on the nest from the bedroom of my old house!

Hi Trigger. Is it a adult female?if it is she could have a scrape somewhere with eggs in at this time of year. The tiercel will try and replace her with another Falcon if she dosen't show up.The quicker you can get her free the better. That is if there isnt anything majorly wrong with her.Dave

Hi Trig
Hope you get her up and flying again :) I would think a good stuffing of quail and ....lab rat .... would pack on the Oz's. Hope there is no underlying probs... any pics of her yet?

A very real situation at this time of year. If she is uninjured and only needs a bit of weight then try and get her up as quick as possible. What are the full circumstances of the find? Was she glanced by a wagon or just found in a garden somewhere?
Would be nice to see some pics if you have time mate.

She has eaten a whole quail this morning and has a rat for later. I am hazading a guess that she is around 3 / 4 years. Her plumage still shows signs of juvenile colouring. Does'nt look like she has any other problems. She was found in a garden. I am hoping to put her back out in a couple of days. Took some pics for the records so Superfly can sort that for me!

It looks like a immature bird to me.It certainly isn't a adult.I wonder if a adult beat it up while it was in the adult's territory,it does look in pretty good condition.Dave

Feather wise, she's in pretty good condition but so thin she could barely stand.
Now Jens giving her a good feast she should hopefully improve quickly.
The only thing that looked anything other than in top condition is her tail, which was straight edged, as if she'd been dragging it along the floor. Then again, if she's been weak for a few days, she could well be. The people did say they'd seen her on the ground in the field. Hopefully she was just having trouble with finding a good meal between the rather wintry weather we've been having. Or as you say, could of been getting a hard time from another competitor. If she is "new to the game", may be she's not quite learned to stand up for herself as it were.
The pictures don't really do her justice, then again, hard to get a wild bird to pose nice when she's annoyed and hungry.

Even if there are no long bone fractures, fractures of the clavicle are fairly common following collisions and RTA's, not easy to feel either. If it has been in an accident the eyes also need checking to see if there is a reason for the initial accident and the pecten hasn't been damaged by the trauma.

Hi guys, sorry for not posting, getting a bit hectic here, pere has been checked, she has no lumps / bumps or anything elsle. An adult pair have been observed in the area she came from so looks like you were right, there is a good chance she has been beaten up by adult birds, who are obviously warming up for breeding. \have got another site being monitored and at the rate she is getting through quail, providing the weather is ok, she should be able to go at the weekend. Will attempt to get some pics. Her eyesight is fine,as is her apitite! She is now in a secluded avairy and is getting around fine. Hoping to be busy over easter so will give you an update, if your interested, next week. Thanks for all the advice, Happy easter.
oh, and thanks to Sprout for his kind offer, which time did not allow me to take up. But if he doesn't mind I may pick his brain in the future!

Had a chat to Jen, release did not go according to plan.
The Pere was struggling to gain height and wore herself out quickly, so back to the vets it was.
Looks like she's torn a muscle, which probably happened in a fight or a chase that went wrong. Would also account for her being in generally good condition and just thin.
We have a friend who helps with rehabilitation and he is going to take her, give her the rest and bulking up she needs then help her build her strength up ready for re-release. Right now, like with us, it's just a question of rest then "phsyio".

A torn muscle wouldn;t wear her out, it would prevent her from flying full stop, also I would have expected to see her droop the wing if the muscle tear was severe enough to alow her to be recaptured again so easily. I suspect there is something else causing the weakness, blood tests and faecal tests are next in order I feel.

Doesn't sound as though it's suitable to go back to me. It was probably one that wasn't going to survive its first year and was lucky to be found.....

I dunno the full info from the vets, the torn /pulled muscle thing is my intpretation of her failing to get any action going, she's certainly fiesty enough. I am seeing Jen this weekend so I'll get the definitive story then and what's happening in regards to tests etc.
I'm sure she'll shoot me down if I've got it wrong, in which case, I'll probably be back here eating humble pie.

Ok,
Checked with Jen, it was indeed a damaged muscle and it's been confirmed that it just needs time to heal and for the Pere to get some strength before release. So she is going to a friend who will have her in hack, ready for a safe release when she's got full strength back. Nothing else reported wrong with her, everyone is very happy with her progress so far which is good.
