Just thought that this would be usefull to someone.
I have just visited a couple of leather sofa stores, and politely asked for any old leather swatch books they may have, (for my son's art project;-) ) and have come away with armfulls of lovely leather, probably about 50 pieces all together, the largest are around A4 size and the rest are around A5 size, all are about 1 - 1.5mm thick, and an amazing range of colours from Antique browns and Blacks through Greens, Reds, Grays, and dare I even say it Pink! And best of all, totaly free!!
So what will the best dressed bird be wearing this season! :yawinkle:

I think you will find that the leather is not up to the standards we would use for anklets etc.

Good thinking Harris! If nothing else they would make good overlays for decent vegetable tanned hood leather, or do some lovely edging. Will have to try that!

Yes it is, I just finished my first hood with it, I got 2 types the first were samples for Antique style furniture, lovely grain and patina, in Browns, Greens and Deep Reds, these are all A4 size and about 1.5mm thick, the others are from modern sofas, about 40 different colours all A5 size, very soft and A5 size in just about every colour you can imagine!

I'll have to go visit a couple places, then. What better way to practice making equipment than by using free leather in all sorts of pretty colours? :)

Hi Simon,
I'm in the business myself, and I can tell you most of the imported leather furniture is rubbish.
But, if you're interested, you're welcome to help yourself to a sackful of the better quality leather I have left over from the sofas we make.
I could bring some to the Fair if you're going.
Best wishes,
Tony.

Hi Jeff,
yes mate, it's www.jayrest.com (http://www.jayrest.com)
It's all quite traditional in design and manufacture, and it'll last forever --- not like all this High Street stuff:yawinkle:.
Best wishes,
Tony.

Tig the leather Harris mentions is excellent for making lures as it is soft and plyable. I was getting these swatches 5 years ago when I started making my lures.

Tig, just pop into Land of Leather, DFS, Harvey's or any of the furniture stores and ask for their old swatch books....................................OR do what I did one time and find the biggest book and ask if you can borrow it for a couple of hours as you're decorating and the wife wants to see what colour the 'new sofas' (that you are going to buy there) will look like in your decor!!!;). Get the book home and remove a few swatches then take it back. I had to put a £10 deposit but the book I had, had about 100 swatches..................I removed about 20 of them, took the book back, got my tenner back then made a load of lures. Ask if you can have the book when the new ones come in.............................

I did a simliar thing to this but with astro turf. Just gave a few of the bigger companies a call and asked if the had any trimmings they didn't want and got sent some. Just cost me postage got about 5/6m2. Did the same thing with samples first but were too small though okay for scales / carry boxes etc.
