View Full Version : Copulating gos, but no semen?????

At the moment I have a 6 year old male imprint gos which copulates on my hand several times a day but he doesn't produce any semen. He mounts my hand well, calling in the mean time but nothing happens at the cloaca. Anyone who has any suggestions?

How long has he been doing it mate? Frequently males will copulate for anything up to two seasons in my experience without giving semen. More normal however with a first time bird is to copulate for a while in its first year then start firing.

Thank you for your response K. I have always hunted with him and when he was in the aviary for moulting, he always courted for nearly four months but I never really tried to get semen from him. This year I do have the intention to make him donate because I have several young imprint females for future breeding. At the moment it is his 3rd week he is mounting my hand. I hope he gets the hang of it soon and starts donating because one of the females is almost ready to be inseminated. I didn't count on any production this year, but it would be good to know he donates semen so I have a source of my own for next season and I might even be able to produce some young from my new females.

When he is on your hand gently press your knuckles against his vent this should stimulate him enough. With any luck he should press down and give you a sample. Sorry if im stating the obvious!

any tips on how to get my male goshawk to copulate. he is doing everything apart from mounting my hand

male gos give semen last night for the first time. just tried again for first time today and he was diving all over the place. how long do you guys leave it between seminations?

managed to get another sample out of my male tonight. anyone needing any finnish gosahwk semen in south wales area let me know.
