hi i havnt posted here for a while, i am leaving school next week so ill have a lot of time on my hands and hopeing of getting a hawk. i have previously had a male harris, but the bird needed more time which i unfortunatly didnt have.
iv been offered a female red tail hawk but i dont think it has hunted for a while or ever and now its 4 years old, would this hawk be ok to train and hunt with and would i still be able to break it to ferrets. (sorry if these are stupid questions but i dont want to get the bird then have to rehome it)
also is there any falconry clubs local to middlesbrough
thanks in advane for your advice.
are you buying the rt our getting it for free if i was you go out and get a brand new just 18 weeks old and teach it your way the rt could have bad habits.

Hi nikey, even if the was free u would be sorry u took it ,a bird with a clean sheet is what u need ,that old rt prob could be flown, but it would take a lot more time and effort than a youngster

nikey mate i know you have had and flown a harris but what sort of experience of falconry do you have ??
Is it solely the harris
do you in your own mind think you have the experience to deal with a hawk that doesnt suffer fools kindly??
i have taken on a p/r owl in the past at 18months od and boy did he have an attitude hated me but loved the missus, basicallymate have you had to deal with narky moments and the likes if not then dont take on the frt
only my opinion and am sure a few may go the other way but hey :D

thanks in advane for your advice.first of all with the redtail being 4yrs old and a female dont waste your money buy yourself a young one that you can train yourself because if this one at 4yrs old takes a dislike to you it will put you of redtails for a long time

Probably best avoided; you could end up with whole heap of problems that could take ages, if ever, to rectify. As others have said; go for a new bird.

thanks lads i'll keep away from this RD bird. i will probably get a young harris. and for romeoharrishawk i am going to college straight after school which will only be 2 days a week and from 9 till 2 so i should have plenty of time for the next 2 years.
one thing that is realy putting me off is this bird flu will i still be able to get a good quality diet for the bird. (will places still sell chicks and quail)

Dont worry avout the bird Flu, its about as likley to affect your hawk food as VD :yawinkle:
And for what its worth my advice is to get a first year male Red.

black bird is right, if you get your food from from a good supplier such as honey brook farm you will have no worries atall getting high classs grub for your bird, just if it hits really hard then avoid wild animals for a while!!
go for the harris mate.... stu

yep i have seen red tails work, i used to have one myself..... but have enjoyed the harris' much much more sinse i had my first harris 3 years ago..... but i suppose its a matter of opinion, i wouldnt go back to a red tail for anything now, not after the ace experiences with my 2 Harris Hawks... stu

As some 1 said earlier its nice to see a young lad thinking and not jumping in, a female red is a great bird and such lovely birds and if it was a young 1 it would'nt be a bad thing, but because its 4 yrs old like people have said get a young 1, but going off experience with reds i would go for a nice female harris m8, much more comfortable bird and if you like going out with other people they will fly together but reds dont, even though i have heard of one person hunting two male reds together. good luck what ever.
