derek stotton gave cheshire hawking club a talk last week and he uses the extender on to the semen on the hat to help draw it up. five days is the max in the fridge but i know for fact that the rate of its fertility starts to go down straight away, so if poss its best used as fresh as can be. gos semen goes down quicker than falcon semen and i know a few lads that like it used up within two days.

I'm new to this A.I lark but I think you only use extender if the semen sample is very small and difficult to manage and in fear of drying up.
Don't know if my hat bird (3/4 Pere/Barbary) is any different to anyone elses but he does large amounts and I have never needed to use any extender.

Hi Guys..........I normally use semen extender at a 50/50 mix for all semen that I am going to store. Where possible I like to inseminate with fresh semen.
Semen stored in the fridge at 4 c last for 3 days and then I throw it out, I tend to try to use the semen within 24 Hours and as soon as I have replacement semen to go in the fridge I just throw the older stuff away.

I use the family fridge to store spare semen from my tiercel peregrine, but it is so full at the moment that it is iced up. It was obviously too cold and killing the spermatozoa.
The sollution was to place the semen, in its ependorph tube, in a plastic 35mm film cassette holder (with damp tissue as packing), in a thermos flask of cold water with an ice cube.
Each time I add or remove samples I add another ice cube.
It keeps for days like this. Still viable at 3 days, probably more.
My tiercel is producing large volumes of semen and i have found by experimentation that his semen stores better without extender/dilutent.
It may be that the high volume of seminal fluids with a normal number of spermatozoa is creating the same situation as with other birds semen and extender.
Anyway you have to go with what works.
The genetics of the individual male will varry and so not all semen will respond in the same way to the same set of conditions.
Race horse breeders know that the semen from one stallion will freeze and be viable afterwards yet another stallion will not have viable semen when treated the same way. It has nothing to do with how good a race horse it is.
I used to look for absolute rules by which to do things but of course mother nature does not work like that, you have to think outside of the box and be flexible.
