After clearing out the girls rooms we decided to help them raise some money and take it all to a car boot sale. On the table next to us there was one of those wooden stands that I have only ever seen in peoples houses usually with a plant pot on the top.

It has a top about 8inch in diameter and a base around 12-14inch with a turned/twisted upright.

The top has a slight lip on it and I wondered if, with a little modification (adding a spike to the bottom to keep it stable) and the addition of the right astroturf for the top would this make an acceptable perch for a harris??

It is about 50-60cm tall.

The bargain bit is it only cost £3!!!!!

Any ideas greatfully received even if its to say its useless chuck it as £3 isnt a great loss.

Thanks
Carl

I'd be a little concerned about the barley-sugar? twisting on the post - will the tethering ring catch on it at all? If the grooves and swirls are of a gentle radius it may be okay.

just what i was thinking...sounds like to me...that you will produce something that kindof looks more like a block

(nothing to do with me took pic off forum)

Ah ok.....thats the kind of input I was after.

So harris's should be kept on a bow then not a block??

Not a problem as I wont even be getting a bird for quite a while but for £3 I couldnt pass up the opportunity if it would have been ok. Best be on the looksee for a bow now then.

Out of interest why does a harris require a bow rather than a block??

Cheers

By tradition it has become accepted practice that falcons are kept on blocks and broadwings and accipters are kept on bows. Although the anatomy of a birds foot and behaviour of wild birds does not really present an absolute case as to why this should be so. Falcons may nest on cliff ledges; yet they do not spend their entire lives avoiding perching in trees.
