Here is some scribbling I have done leading up to Cherry laying eggs. My first experience of it and it is absolutely brilliant.:supz:
I have tried for 4 years now and think it could have been done earlier, had I got enough experience, receive more, better, or some kind of different advice. Or actually doing Terry's course sooner.
01/04/2006 Did an AI Course with Terry Burden from Kentish Falconry.02/04/2006
Started behaving REALLY well
03/04/2006
Giving her smaller amounts at a time, one chick per visit, fed two for the day
04/04/2006
First chick today made her stand and wait to get it after having to careful touch her back but still wants to kill me
05/04/2006
Fed 2 docs again today visited her 5 times
06/04/2006
Took 3 Docs today and was a bit mean toward me on the 4th one so only gave a leg & head
07/04/2006
Today only offered 6 Doc legs to make her keener all started looking better and less aggression.
08/04/2006
Much better today starting to chup me well and tipping for me to inseminate, fed her 2 Docs
09/04/2006
Great day she is tipping up her tail, chupping me and calling all day for me to come visit her, made several small visits with food
10/04/2006
Today I saw he cloaca opening really well and a bit more swollen, it was also moving to accept semen. 3 Docs
11/04/2006
First call at AM and boy was her up for it, took the glove off and could even handle her fed her a quail in several bits.
12/04/2006
Displaying correctly for insemination and more swollen taking food so sweetly and seems like a new bird.
13/04/2006
Desperate for semen now as I think she is really ready but can not get hold of Angelo, worried. She is great though.
14/04/2006
Managed to get some from Angelo today, gave her most of it, 2.5 times the amount he said, rather easy and it sucked in very well
15/04/2006
Gave her the rest, very little. Got more in the late afternoon and gave her more about 3 1/2 loads
17/04/2006
Saw her brood spot today nice and pink. Gave her pure semen today about 2.5 times the amount at about 6PM
18/04/2006
Saw she was really swollen at about 4PM Yahoo!! 17AM Laying an egg now! Off to get semen ASAP. Could not give it to her too dark late and would not stand well.
19/04/2006
Inseminated her this morning at about AM Not as keen as I would have thought, but got it in well enough I think?
20/04/2006
Inseminated her at about 17AM Very easily taken and really swollen so looks like another egg is ready.
21/04/2006
She has laid another egg today, only found it at 12:AM, but she had been sitting tight since early about 9 am Gave her another insemination at about PM
22/04/2006
Wanting insemination from AM and standing very well. Fed her a quail. She is still very keen to be inseminated and it rather swollen and feels like another egg is due soon.

The feather in the nest to the right of her in the first pic looks a little large to have come from her brood patch!

Most all of my goshawks females will pick up feathers that they are moulting and add them to their nests, sometimes spending a great amount of time to weave them in. Good job so far Paul. My first female is down on her eggs the second female is due her second egg tomorrow, and third female has three in the incubator.

Inseminated her yesterday at 5 past 6 in the evening with about a 3 times dose.
Been calling a lot today from early in the morning. At about 9am I found her on another egg.
This is number 3:supz:
Noticed she was keen to let me inseminate too, as she got off the nest and was right up for it.

Paul.....First may I say well done at least I now know 1 person actually listened to what I said on the course.
I am not a Goshawk specialist but the principal is the same.
However I have to say something about your insemination methods, the best way to get fertile eggs is by inseminating the correct size sample as many times a day as she will allow. If you give a larger sample most of it is wasted you are not doing a forced insemination so you will have plenty of chances to inseminate again, so little and often is the key, if you watch a natural pair they are copulating all the time and the sooner you can get semen into her after she lays the better chance you have of a fertile egg also inseminating before the egg is laid is good if she will allow it, other than that you are doing well and I am praying you are lucky with the fertility

Yes I was afraid of spilling the semen Terry, so I give her a short shot and then mess around with the nesting material or the water or leave and come back in a minute or so and then she is ready again and pop in the rest. As you said she is better storing it in her, than what I can do it?
Great Job... May the hawk god bless your bird with fertile eggs...Ahhh Sandeep Thanks mate:oops:

Tonight between 7:45pm and 8:45pm Cherry laid her 4th egg, insemination for this one took place just before she laid number 3, so we will see if it is fertile?
She is siting tight now and will not let me inseminate her, so I will see if she is up for it tomorrow!

Thanks Guys!
Yes that lot of semen was a real good batch. I had a lot yesterday that turned out to be totally blank, so she never got one and could not give her one today as I was running late and when I got the semen back here she was about to lay and did not want it.
We can only hope for the best:?:
All VERY exciting though and new:!: :-P

At least if nothing else you know you can both do it so there is always next year, but I am sure you have got it right this year so you may be a Daddy to 4 Goshawks with any luck

She is really sitting well on the eggs now and I almost feel like I will bore everyone just repeating it.
I have however found she will not eat if I am not actually feeding her by hand, so the whole male roll seems to be something I need to take further with her. Is this normal?
It also helps to feed her on a one to one basis anyway, I think, as I can then be 100% sure the vitamins and supplements I am giving her are not wasted but really comsumed. I am also loving the gentleness of her something I have not had with her in 4 years, of trouble and strife:lol:
PS What is the earliest I could candle the eggs?

Tried them with the Brinsea, but could not make anything out, could just see the yolk a bit. So not sure or it is not looking good.
It may also be my imagination but I think the eggs are heavier, but I never weighed them so can't tell.

I know but as I said not sure:(
My live is SO busy at the moment I am thinking what happens happens? I took a gamble and the semen from the male is good and many people have used it and had good results, so we will see.
According to folks that know I have done enough to get fertile eggs.
If I get one I will be happy, it is just the achievement thing really.

I am just reading this treat last time was when the first egg was laid..found it one of the greatest posts to read here really. And I am very pleased and happy for Hawkmaster with this excellent results! in fact friend of mine breeds goshawk naturally well as far as possible and i also follow his developments each year. It it one of the greatest if not the greatest experience especially for falconers having only one or a few birds they breed with. Am looking forward to more information and pictures about the developments! And wish Hawkmaster all the best but since the 3 eggs all hatched the rest will probably go very fine not many risks anymore. Really great and all the best for now!
