Just a general one, but how much is too much?

A bells on legs, tails, necks and flying with two transmitters.

But if you think about it added to the reward tag, squirrel chaps, backpack, tailmount and everything else what differences can it make to the flight of the bird and what g forces are involved in the stoop?

Do you think its better to travel light or belts and braces?

I have my own opinions but just wondered if anyone had good/bad experiences?

if i was flying a smaller bird like a spar i would be very concious about what weight i would be putting on the bird. For instance i would use traditionals and might not use bells just have the 3.5g transmitter if it was vocal. Probably a backpack mount too so its symetrical and not hindering anything. For my RT though a few grams really can't make any difference but i still make sure everything is balanced and i make sure the bells are light.

Have to agree there CZ

What you said about symetry is a good point too.

Also made me think if anyone has ever used extra weight to improve fitness.

I know I might take some pelters for this, but I generally leave the leash and swivel on when jumping them to the fist if I can't fly them that day and it does make a difference to their work rate. (I'm fortunate enough to be able to jump them indoors with nowhere or nothing to damage them selves on)

That idea was taken from some of the fitness training I used to do with weights used to improve speed and response time....

Awaiting the onslaught.....

I must agree with CZ; when I flew the Perlin last year, he had leg bells.....Noble No.0, although when very close I could hear them, just, when he was 20 yards away, they were useless!!! They did whistle when he was flying hard though.
My HH usually goes out like a Morris dancer with beels on both legs and tail. Noble 5's, and the same with my Saker but only on the legs.

I can hear her bells out to 7-800 yards away in the right conditions.
I personally don't think that 'extra weight' training will do much for the confidence of he bird; just plenty of regular flying in varying wind conditions is the best way. Both of my birds are flown in winds over 25mph. The Saker prefers a good wind in general and she is very fit, (she must be, as she has had several encounters with wild Pere's and jinxed and stayed with them without getting hurt)

I flew a Jack last season, initially wearing a mini transmitter which was supposed to be so light as not to hamper him in any way. I could see this wasn't the case at all. I tried mouting the transmitter on the tail, and the leg, but to the keen observer, it was clearly affecting him. In the end (gasp!) I flew him with no telemetry at all.
