Hi All,

On Saturday (22/04/06) my female Harris laid an egg. This is the first time for both the male and female. I know the pair have been copulating since, she's now (27/04/06) sitting this one lone egg. No more have been laid since. Is this unheard of?

Steve.

Mine normally sit solidly from 3rd egg, she sometimes sits from 1st, very on and off.
I'm no expert, but if its the 1st time let her sit and hatch, easier to rear 1 than 4, if it does'nt hatch she'll probably lay a 2nd Clutch soon after removing the dud egg.

My 1st ever clutch was all infertile, after removing them after 40 odd days, she laid a 2nd Clutch of 3 eggs, only 2 were hatched and reared. Since then its been 100% fertility and rearing.

Regards
Miguel

Hi Miguel, its not that I want lots of eggs its just I've not read or heard of a HH laying a single egg and wondered if something could be a miss?

If this one egg was fertile and she hatched and reared a single chick i'd be over the moon.

Pretty good (or not in his case) to be that old and still trying to breed that many young?

i no as they must be using energy and strength to produce the eggs every time he took them out they would lay more so this year after they laid he,s switched them for pot eggs and so far theyre sitting them and not laid any more so he,s happy he used to think be cause he fed a good nutritional diet it was that so he even feed them on doc to see if that would slow them down but it didnt

I'm sure she'll be happier sat on pot eggs rather than recycling.

Steve, Is the female OK?
Does she look fine sat on the egg and is she coming off to feed with any zeal and moving OK when she does?

I dont want to sound alarmist but my fathers harris did exactly the same thing and a week later she was dead (not her first egg however but the first egg in the second season she layed)

Tim,

This is why I'm asking bud. See looks fine... She comes off to feed, she also looks alert while sitting. They've been copulating every night at dusk but I was at the YFC meet last night so not sure if they did. Yesterday when I used a spy hole (I only have a camera over the nest) she came over (moved fine) and told me go away (like only a HH could :yawinkle: ), she appears fine. I was wondering if something could be a miss, but she does look healthy.
