This years meet will be in Kearny, Nebraska the week of November 19-24. It will be in conjunction with the International Association for Falconry and Conservation of Birds of Prey (IAF). It looks to be an outstanding meet.

Thanks. I hope to meet a lot of folks and put a face to all the names I've met on the net. I also hope to "team up" with a few people for the week and try to catch some stuff! I'm not driving that far to come home empty handed....
It'll be me, my wife(also a falconer), and daughter(might be one by then). Probably 3 birds and 2 dogs.I can hardly wait.

I look forward to seing you both there. BUT I do wonder, has there been a recent reliable game report from any falconers near Kearney?
If not, I'll have to make ti a longer trip, swing thru Jimmy's are first, then Weasel's, to get some serious squirrel and rabbit hunting in!

I haven't found anyone from our neck of the woods that seems to be interested in making the haul. So if I make it I guess it will have to be a solo run, so with that in mind I may not make it out...

I've spoken to a few folks out west, friends and mild aquaintences and they keep twisting my arm to make at least one NAFA event in this decade  so the tempation is definately there.

Thanks for asking...

Hi Greg,

I will struggle this year due to work commitments but would be interested to look at going next year hence the question. I would love to see how you guys do things on the other side of the pond. Aside from that it is a great excuse to get away, have a few drinks and talk face 2 face with a few of you about falconry and our different experiences.

Kind regards

Adrian

We're set up in the Holiday Inn, but the meeting points for everybody are the weathering yard and the evening gatherings. Best watch out having the G-man for a guide.... He'll corrupt ya for sure! ;-)

Hey Richard,

I have never been to Kearney, but I was told all 3 hotels are within 100 feet of each other and the weathering area is centrally located. Sounds like a great setup and it won't really matter which hotel you are in. I just hope we can all arrange to get together. I know talking about it is a lot easier than actually arranging it. LOL.

I got the red-tail out on Wednesday for the first time and she nailed a squirrel about 100 feet behind my house. So she is on her way, and can't wait to chase some bunnies and those fox squirrels in Kearney with her.

Rosie (Harris) has caught 2 rabbits so far, one this morning. I am still figuring her out since she was a hand me up and is my first Harris. But I think she will do well in Kearney on the bunnies.

See you in a few weeks!

It is a nice setup. The meet hotel has a water park in it, but the other two hotels have a free breakfast so it's a toss up. Of course, if you stay in one of the other hotels you might be able to sneak in to the water park if you have friends staying in the meet hotel:lol: That's what happened last time, anyways:D

This sounds all too familiar:wink: . In Regina after the Canadian meet there was a water slide that came down four stories, my mate ( 170 lbs ish ) took 26 seconds to get down. Myself of a similar stature to Mr Large made it down in 17 seconds but produced a mini tidal wave that half emptied the plunge pool at the bottom:rolleyes:

Ahhhh, its all clear now! Except, of course, for the "kick some okie ass" bit. Okie ass is unique in that it, inherently, cannot be kicked. Jeff knows this.

Lauren,
Your quite right. Okie ass is unusualy resiliant to kicking!

I had canceled my plans for attending the NAFA meet this year, and instead chose to "let the wind guide me" but as you know the Oklahoma wind blows strangely.....I have a feeling though that if it comes out of the south this friday, I may end up in Nebraska afterall.

Hope to see you all there.

I won't fly around Garden City, but from all reports, Dodge City (where we're headed) is relatively safe. Remember, Reppa got zapped (mildly, thank goodness) at that same meet. And there shouldn't have been an ounce of danger where he tried to land. I will NEVER fly around there again, but the folks I'm going with have hunted Dodge City many times without a problem. I don't think it's a statewide problem.
Oh, and I hope you're not expecting too much from Marker-she hasn't flown in over 2 weeks so she's probably going to be rather rusty. As I've said, if it weren't for NAFA I would've put her up for the molt already. Shanti on the other hand is going gangbusters and should do great:)

Look out Nebraska, here we come!

Lord help us all the Georgia boys are commin'. Reminds me of that old Charlie Daniels song " The Devil Went Down to Georgia", you remember the end of that song.

When the devil finished, Jimmy said, "Well, you're pretty good, old son, but sit down in that chair right there and let me show you how it's done."

Fire on the mountain. Run, boys, run. The devil's in the House of the Rising Sun. Chicken in the bread pan pickin' out dough. Granny, does your dog bite? No, child, no.

The devil bowed his head because he knew that he'd been beat. And he laid that golden fiddle on the ground at Jimmy's feet. Jimmy said, "Devil, just come on back if you ever want to try again. 'Cause I told you once, you son of a gun, I'm the best that's ever been."

The names have been changed to protect the innocent.
Bring it on Jimmy,
See ya there old son!

Lee

Lee, It is only about 300 miles for you. Just get some crankin' CD or a book on tape to keep you company! I've driven coast to coast solo 6x and once you get on the road you are half way there! Just watch it if you travel through Kansas! Those state troopers love to write tickets!!

Hope you go and have fun!

I had trouble with a special order trim pack. It came two days late and the home owner came up with some new stuff to do. I was spose to have the day off today to get ready, well that didn't happen. Now I am going to have to get ready Saturday as I have two windows to install tomarrow.

Wouldn't you know just when I want to take some time off work goes nuts. So Tasha and I prolly will not be there untill some time on Sunday.

Well, finally got to Kearney, NE this evening. Visited some friends, had a few drinks, traded hawking stories, went out to dinner at the steak house across the street, back to the friends hotel for more drinks and hawking stories and now it is midnight and going to bed so we can go hawking in the morning. I will try and post an update on the days hawking events and some pictures when I can. No promises on the quality of the pics as I am sure they will never be the quality of Tasha's and Greg's. Oh yeah, the Makers Mark was really good tonight. LOL

Well, we got a late start getting out hunting this morning as we had to go get hunting licenses, a few supplies, weekly supply of alcohol (very important), and breakfast.

The birds have been in their travel boxes for the past couple days beside their daily weathering along the way, so they were a little stiff and disoriented. Damon was the first to get his red-tail, Earl out. He flew up into a tree and followed along and then was off after the first fox squirrel we saw. He flew into the tree and kind of sized up this huge thing moving slowly through the tree. They are a lot slower than are eastern gray squirrels. He watched it run to another tree and flew over and there was another one in that tree. He decided that the second one looked more his size, he hunts at 29 oz. He flew over into the tree and grabbed the squirrel and then dropped it. It landed in a bush right below the tree and dropped to the ground. About the same time it hit the ground, Earl slammed into it and it was right at Damon's feet and he grabbed it and put the big squeeze. We high fived and Earl got to eat the heart and lungs and then was traded off and brought to the fist and hooded.

Next it was my red-tails turn, Addie. She too was a little stiff and took a few minutes to figure out we were out hunting. She followed well and flew over across a fence line as she must have saw something run under a brush pile. I called her back over and we continued on. It wasn't long before she flew over and crashed into a brush area at the base of a tree. Damon yelled it was a fox squirrel and I ran over and the squirrel went up the tree. I yelled for Addie to go up and she slowly worked her way up. But the big foxie was at the top of the tree limb and there was not enough room to go any higher. She tried flying up and grabbing, but was unable to connect. She finally forced him down and when he got to the base of the tree she tried to slam him but the brush was too thick and she missed and he ran off. We continued on and I walked up to a tree and hit my brush pole on it and one fox squirrel ran up the tree and another ran down the tree and across the ground. I yelled "Ho Ho Ho" and Addie flew over and slammed the fox squirrel. I ran over and she had both feet on its head and NAFA trip kill #1 was in the bag.

Well, off to the meet hotel to see if anyone is wondering around and if NAFA has set up anything. I will keep you all posted of what goes on as I can. Oh yeah, forgot to take the camera, so no pics today, but I will definatly take it tomorrow.

Well, I'll do my best to get some decent shots, but there's no guarantees:) While Kearney won't be as scenic as Utah, hopefully we'll be able to put more in the bag. I decided the truck had too many problems and fixed the van instead. Got finished in time to go hawking and give the van a test drive. When we got back, I did some last minute touch ups on the van and transferred everything from the truck. Just gotta toss the birds into their boxes and load the luggage and we'll be on the road early morning! Should arrive in Kearney around noon.

Got in some good hawking this afternoon. Billy caught a bunny in fine style and Ms Havoc got two in her typical efficient manner. They're both at weight and hopefully ready to do me proud in Kearney!

OK...I'm back....a little delicate this morning....and yesterday morning, but here none-the-less. We are headed to a bunny spot today to put three harris's up together. One of the Louisiana falconers found a bunny meca out west of us. He caught 10 bunnies in the past two days. Me thinks I will be following him! High winds today and yesterday so the bunny hawking was difficult at best and we came up empty handed. I will catch more this week though....The Hotel bar closes at midnight, so that forces us to move the parties from one room to another or until we run out of beer.

Well my first day was spent helping with the weathering yard. Was drinking last night and at 1am someone asked me to do the weathering. I had to get up at 6am to be there by 6:30am. We will see how late I am up tonight.

You will have to get updates from others. I heard the game populations are down and not many ppl are catching rabbits. On top of that the winds were 20-30MPH. I will be out tomarrow so will let you all know.

It has been great putting Names to faces!!

Monday NAFA Update:

We got out this morning and headed to a place way out of town that we heard about this morning. The wind was calm and with expected high winds in the afternoon, we figured we better take advantage of it. I got Rosie (Harris) out of the box and we worked our way across an open field. When we got into an area where there were small trees and some brush piles we jumped the first rabbit. Rosie was off and just barely missed it. We worked the area hoping to get it back up but was unable to find it. We continued down through the area and Damon jumped a rabbit and yelled “Ho, Ho, Ho” and Rosie again barely missed it. She was up in an instant and followed over to where it was hiding in the brush. I moved around to the back side of the brush and flushed the rabbit out into the opening and Rosie slammed it. I didn’t see the flight but Damon said it was a classic. He said Rosie grabbed the rabbit with both feet on the head and the rolled once. He said she didn’t grab the rabbit and refoot up to the head, but hit the rabbit with both feet on the head on the initial grab. I think she knows what she is doing. LOL This was Rosie’s 3rd rabbit this year, but the prior two were taking from behind me as the rabbits tried to sneak out the back side and she was way back and was able to hit them. But this one, she had flown right up above us when it was flushed and when she missed, flew up over it and let us flush it for her. I am hoping this will help her to stay close when following. I will update you all on that later in the week.

Next up was Damon’s passage red-tail, Earl. The winds picked up and we were beginning to wonder, but Earl handled the wind with ease. We continued through the same area and didn’t see any rabbits, but as we were working through the area, Earl saw a big fox squirrel and flew over into the tree it was in. He just sat there looking at it and we were encouraging him, but he wouldn’t have any part of it. The fox squirrel looked like a big cat running through the tree limbs. LOL. I think Earl is a smart bird. We continued on, but Earl wouldn’t follow. Damon kept trying to get him to come forward when he saw why Earl wasn’t coming. The next tree over was a fox squirrel on the side of the tree. We worked our way back and Damon got the sling shot out and shot a few and got the squirrel moving. It ran over into the tree Earl was in and went up into a nest. Earl saw him go in the nest and flew up to the nest and dropped down and snatched him right out of the nest and they floated down to the ground and Damon was there to grab the squirrel and help dispatch it. Earl picked this fox squirrel as it was much smaller than the other one.

Attached are a few photo’s of Earl. I can’t take pics when I am flying my birds.

Having a great time in Kearney, Nebraska!

We went out this afternoon with some friends to watch there falcons. One had a flight on some mallards but missed and the other on some prairie chickens and also missed. Attached are a few pics of the mallard flight.

Went out today with Addie (red-tail) and chased a couple fox squirrels but didn't connect. She was a little high and went into a soar and I was thinking, bye bye, nice to know ya. But I threw out the lure and she came back. WHEW! Here are a few pics of her, one she just missed a squirrel in the fork of a tree and the other was just a good pic of her flying through the trees.

What type of transmitter is the Scout transmitter - any details ?

Jim.

Tasha55403
01-12-2006, 11:28 PM
Huh...it's not on their website yet. They were advertising them bigtime at the meet. Let's see if I remember this right:lol: 40 day battery life, 40 mile line of sight, a very affordable $125, 9.5g with battery. It's meant for big shortwings. The transmitter is pretty big, but fairly light for it's size. And very sturdy-the salesman whacked the thing against a glass case-hard-to demonstrate it's indestructableness:lol:

Jim.

ps I seem to remember it had a very short aerial.

Berkutchi
01-12-2006, 11:42 PM
Sounds right to me. Let's see, got the advert here...says its: 7'' and 9.5 grams with battery. Continues running down to -40F, has a low battery double-beeb warning at 5 days, magnetic on/off switch, can mount any method, temperature and frequency stable, re-configurable (for different channels and fast/slow beep), and if it runs continuously for 24 hours, assumes your bird is lost and slows down the pulse rate to conserve power. Interesting.

Jimmy
01-12-2006, 11:42 PM
I bought one of the first ones he sold. So far, so good. But, the battery cover seems to want to come unscrewed by itself after awhile, despite them swearing that it wouldn't be a problem..... I'd recommend using a piece of tape on them to help hold the cover.

Yes, short antenna. I heard one guy say, "Hell with that, I don't want to have to search for no damn hawk for forty days!"

But with forty days contiuous a single battery should last most folks for about a season. It also has the magnet off option for a bit more, so you don't have to remove the battery after each use. And it has a special beep to tell you when the battery is down to ten days usage.

Hadn't heard that, but we like to put some colored tape on ours anyway to make them easier to find when dropped.

BTW, the heavy duty tail mount springs are almost too strong and make it difficult to put on, though I am getting used to it now.

Jimmy,

I was going to buy one until I saw how big it was, I think it is called The Scout. Don't you find it just too big for a leg mount? And I would think with it being so big, if you tail mounted it, you would just be asking for your bird to get its tail feather torn out. I have a micro and for anything other than a longwing, I can't imagine a better transmitter. I wish this new one was smaller, I love the price!

Jimmy

It is a little wide, Fred.
But, it seems to work okay. I don't tailmount, so can't comment on that. I think I like my Merlin better though. It's smaller, lighter, and has about the same range and battery life. The price is about the same as well.

FredrickFogg

I don't have a PowerMax, but I believe the casing is much bigger from what I could see at their display case at the NAFA meet. And the shape is much different, where the PowerMax is round like a pencil, the Scout is flat like the Micro, but about 3 times as big. I also have trouble with the lids on my Micro, but just put a little black electrical tape on it each time I put in a new battery and haven't had any problems with the lid coming off that way. I had the lid come off when I wasn't using the tape and had to order a new one. Of course, 2 days after I ordered the new lid, I found the old one in her weathering area. Mine has the tap on/tap off and I left it on her all the time.

Fred you are thinking the RT+, that one is like a pencil. The powermax is the same shape asthe scout only a little smaller. The Scout has better range than the powermax according to the literature.

Battery life is about 3-4 times the powermax and the advertised line of sight for the powermax is 30+ miles and the scout is 40 miles. All Marshall transmitters come with magnetic on and off. It is not an option, they all have it. The Powermax is $245 and the scout is $125. Weight of the PM is 7g's and the scout is 9.5g's. The RT+ is 8.4g's.

I have one coming but he is making me one that is both tail and leg mount. So it has both the post's for the tailmount spring and the handle for the bewit.

Don't know x-factor.....don't watch much TV. Is he same guy that does American Idol? If he is then he does look like Noel.

By the way, Noel never did get the spoon stuck to his nose, he must be a slippery weasel.

Greg

I just wanted to point out that I was wrong here. When talking to the ppl at the booth at NAFA I was told the wrong info, or I had too many barley pops to get it right:oops: . According to the web site the magnetic on/off is optional with the Scout, and the line of site range for the Powermax is greater than the Scout.

Sorry about that,

Greg

Yeah, but ALL of the Scouts at the Meet had the optional magnet on/off for free as part of a promotional/meet only freebee. And they specify 40 mile LOS on the Scout, and is it other than 30+ for the PowerMax? The plus can add a lot of range....

I know, I'm behind on my posting and I don't think Greg posted any hawkin' pics from the NAFA meet, so here's a few for y'all-lol. For those that haven't looked on my redtail's diary I posted my diary of the NAFA meet there. It's kinda long, so I won't repost it here, but the thread is here (http://www.falconryforum.co.uk/showthread.php?p=429656#post429656) and it's posts # 183, 184, 185 and 188.
