What do you eagle lads think to this kind of mix.

From a hunting point of view they are sub-standard.
From a display point of view and if you want to watch them up soaring for long periods they are excellent.

Why water down a Golden? Ahh yes that would be it, because its far cheaper to buy a female Steppes to pair or inseminate than a pure Golden.

it was mentioned that a steppes can get up quicker from a miss to carry on with a chase than a goldie, so mixing ????
thats why i was asking

Dont believe that for a minute as the Golden is a far more active eagle than the scavaging Steppes.

Jesus they realy do just look like Steppes.
Anyone here trained/flown/hunted a Golden/Steppe? (Not for displays!!)
Have you, K? You seem to dislike them - is that through experience - or just an opinion?

I have been involved over three seasons helping my brother with a step/goldie male.Hunting was a nightmare, very inconsistent, would not take on slips beyond 50 yards. It would wait on very well at pitches of easily 1000ft
but would not tip a wing at a hare, and that was at various weights. We took it down as low as we dare and it made no difference to its willingness to hunt.
Also it would wait on for as long as you wanted and was very responsive, even at a higher weight .
Compared to a Golden from a hunting point of view I wouldn,t touch one with a barge pole, however if you wanted one for displays I would say they are excellent and well worth having.I am in the position that I was able to compare a stepp/goldie,golden and pure steppe over the years.
I am only interested in the hunting aspect,so for me a pure Golden every time.
I wouldn,t touch a steppe, and a steppe/golden is just a watered down inferior golden.

Ive seen them flown. Agree with berkut, watered down Golden. To be fair I had the opportunity to produce them this year as I had an egg layer here. In the end until Berkut sent Cinabar down here I'd decided not to breed from my Golden until I could afford a Golden female. In the past I have handled and flown pure Steppes and whilst I have a soft spot for them I wouldnt really concider them a serious hunting eagle. Therefore whats the point of hybridizing with a decent hunting species?

Sorry this has confused me.
are you saying that a steppes is more responsive than a goldie hence crossing for the purpose of display work. Or that they are useless at hunting. but then you may aswell have a steppes for display and not a goldie.

Exactly.I am only interested in hunting and a steppe/goldie is sub-standard in that respect. However, it is because of this it is less likely to go self hunting and therefore, may make a good display bird, as they are very responsive to the fist, and returning to the falconer in general..Someone posted that a steppe is more likely to get up and have another go if it misses quarry. This is unlikely. As for display work.A goldie may be quite good, especially if it has not been entered as I have found that the more goldies kill, the more they want to kill and although they are very responsive in a non-hunting situation ,they are intelligent enough to realise when they are on hunting ground and as they get older and more experienced they tend to become independant and less responsive to the falconer when hunting.
I hope this makes sense.I am not rubbishing them, but for the price they cost you are probably as well pushing the boat out for a pure golden, especially if it is putting game in the bag you are after.
They could be considered a good stepping stone to flying a golden but that is another matter altogether.

to be honest after seeing the pics that stanley put up thier not the bonniest of birds. But for me in the future im not into stepping stones im more for the real thing at the right time.

I openly admit to nowing very little about Eagles,, but of what I know I would of thought that to cross a 90% hunting bird , with a 90% scavinging species, the outcome would be pretty predictable,, not my first choice for pursuit!!

I have had the pleasure of working with more than my fair share of this hybrid. The company that I work for has had a few. We currently work with 2 females that are used for film work and I hunt with a five year old Male. I would say that they are far harder to get a constant response to quarry than a goldie, with enough effort and persistance they make very capable hunting birds. I have just started to make the switch into more intimidating quarry with my male, NO NO NO not rabbit to hare, im talking hare to muntjac:lol:
Last season was a bit of a wash out due to work commitments, but managing to fit in lure persuits during the week, we still put 14 hares and 23 rabbits in the bag, (all the rabbits were took whilst looking for hares) and then the crowning glory in january we took a muntjac in some local woodland.
I would say that goldie hybrids are more manouverable than straight goldies, definatly more ariel, and will get up more times to rechase somthing that they have missed, especialy in long grass or crops. maybe I have just bben lucky with this particular eagle, but then I would have had to have been lucky with the common buzzards that I have took rabbits with aswell. All it takes Is dedication, and understanding of your birds limitations whilst its learning about hunting, If you hammer them into it then you will have somthing that wont take on slips of more than 50yrds, my male will take on (and be succesful) on slips upto and including 300yrds once fit and confident.
Shame hes moulting at the mo I saw loads of hares out whilst walking the dog last night, she'd have enjoyed flushing them for him.
All the best

Quite nice looking birds... But they miss the majetic look of the Golden... Why would you want to lowbrid them.... Its not good for hunting like a goldie.. and a steppe is good for displays..
So why on Earth would someone cross breed the two....

Because its cheaper to have a couple of female Steppes kicking around than a single female Golden. Also it increases the eggs that are available to the system when inseminating.
