For many years now I have featherd my anklets only on the bottom,,never seeing a reason to feather the top, just lets rings and things, slide down easiear I found, the leg above the anklet is straight, I have even dissputed ownership of a bird by stating this scenario, and have taught this method to many others, on courses, I felt falconers did it because it was the norm, I cant believe no one else has not had rings sitting against the birds leg because of this, whats your views?

Never had a problem, will a flat edge not increase risk of leg scale damage to species prone to bating ?

Dont think so, the leg would be at the wrong angle while bating, making feathering the bottom obvious, the anklet seems to stay very rigged whilst bating.

i just put a piece of leather round my finger and pulled it to simulate a bating bird and the top did rub a bit so i wil keep feathering the tops :supz:
could have been pulling the wrong way but it makes sense to me

I've seen scales displaced - so I'll keep feathering the anklet and not having a problem when using correct sized anklets combined with suitable soft leather.

I have always just feathered the bottom of the anklet..........ring sits nicely just over the top of the anklet.......never had any scale damage...........but each to their own.............

I saw traditional jesses fitted by Phillip glasier once, the leather was quite stiff and hard, wich is what everyone was used to I suppose, nowdays I feel most people use roo skin like me, much more thinner and supple, perhaps here lies the reasoning,, never had scale damage even with muskets,, But did once have a cut leg on a bird, many years ago due to a feathered top, and a closed ring, oh well each to there own this is not a how to do, just curiosity, on my part.

Kev,
Never had scale damage myself but have seen it and it wasn't on the leg with the ring fitted, always assumed it was the top edge of the anklet but they were made of stiff leather.
Good point to raise though.

I do mine on the top and bottom too. A bird bating upwards would put stress on whose scales on the upper part of the Aylmerii, in fact as the legs go back and the strain is taken up it will do it too.
I have however tried not feathering the top and it does seem to make a rather sharp edge in a short time.
If fitted properly and feathered Aylmerii should not drop a ring down.

what i also do is put a very small hole in the anclets to attach leg bells with a small cable tie, makes it easier over bewits to remove them when i go out lamping

I only feather the bottoms - never had problems.

Off say a bowperch to a higher post or to a tree:wink:
But then the pressure would be on the bottom of the anklet surely:confused:

Not sure myself, I would say the top, but it does not matter . . .
Either way is fine, as long as it is safe and does not cause the bird harm, in mine eyes.
I prefer both ends for balance too, as I like things square and symmetrical, and looking even all round.

I agree, both ends looks better, trivial I know! also how many people put the smooth side of the leather on the inside? I was always told to do this so that dirt can not get trapped on the rough surface against the leg.

This would make sense I suppose, but I used to feel flesh side out would realy, absorb grease easier, however as stated I dont think its of any difference nowdays using rooskin, its almost like glass, bothsides!!
