With lots of people talking about breeding and having eggs and therefore chicks etc. Surely there must come a saturation point in the market? If so what happens to all the spare hawks, or do none commercial breeders already find homes for their progeny?
I ask this a a genuine issue, not to be emotive. So please, no silly posts bemoaning back yard breeders etc etc etc.
Good Post! I 've always wondered this as well?
I guess breeders take orders and try to forfill those. Only problem is the breeder can't guarntee how many chicks will be produced. What happens if they produce more than is ordered? Are they then offered to the correct homes but at a discounted price?

spare hawks used such as when kestrels are kept to raise other birds that breed themselves are not wanted. Sometimes its easier to just neck them than find homes for a whole nest of unwanted birds :( just using kestrels as an example. It would be interesting to know where so many problem harris hawks go? probably the same fate...

ive always found this interesting as you always see untouched 05 birds for sale as they have not been sold ?? are these the ones that go for £100 ?? as the space is needed for the 06 chicks :( ,if i every breed any animal or bird i would make sure i had got homes for the youngsters im going to breed ?? as this is a must as i wouldnt be happy to be stuck with loads of youngsters ??? thats why ive not breed my ferret as theres enought out the already without me breeding them cheers ps good thread ben c

I think breeding your own hawk is a great and good thing, but what to do afterwards has always puzzeled me. I hope that CZ is totally wrong on this front.

There are certain breeders who euthanase the male off spring.

I approached Garlands last year for a bird and i was quoted several thousand pounds, this same bird is being sold now for £450.00.
What happens if the bird doesnt get sold?

It always seems to be non native birds and hybreds that are always left - I wonder why ?
Is it due to the fact their easy to breed and bred in the hope of finding a buyer, rather than bred to order ???????????????

Its normally because one sex is seen as a waste product, as it is not in vogue and required buy the Arab market.

I dont know if the market will get saturated - so many die, get crippled or simply get lost each season.
With prices so low, people dont bother to get telemetry, you can get 2 Harrises for the price of a new telemetry set!!
I pre-sold all my 1st clutch before Christmas, birds bred from proven hunting birds will always sell. Breed from any old bird or display stock will be MORE DIFFICULT TO SELL, you cant exactly boast they've taken this or that, if parents are'nt PROVEN.

wouldn't breeding males of these hybrids fall into the category of "hoping to find a buyer"

Don't get me wrong I have no problem with euthanasia per se.....they are after all live stock. However I would hope this is an uncommon thing.
Do 'amateur' breeders breed to order, or is that the priverlidge of the proffessional who has a que? Or have I answered my own question

I can only speak for myself on this one but IF everyone who has requested a bird from me this season carries it through, and IF I hatch all the eggs I am currently incubating. I'll have maybe two Pere/Altais to advertise.

So the idea for 'spare hawks' is not really one that is too common for you then K?

I only breed (or am attempting to breed) a couple of species which I'm fairly sure I could sell with little difficulty. Could have sold the red tails a couple of times over and the greys will certainly find homes also.

Interesting.............so, so far there is not an excess of hawks from 'amateur' breeders then.......A good thing.

Definately not as far as I am concerned. I can't breed enough. All in all it is very difficult to produce any number of birds. Every non breeder should try it to see what it's like! Believe me for the time and trouble taken you really get a bargain. Still if it was easy it might not be so exciting......

I suppose the flip side to this is that LOTS of people are buying hawks, which can lead to many problems.
I am still interested in wether people have homes first and then breed, or breed and then home?
(the quality of the home is another issue  )

I am no breeder, but will say I never thought of even selling any young Goshawks if I was lucky enough to get one or two this year.
Would I in the future if all was good and well, yes but I also feel people do not want to count their chicks before they hatch.
PS Ben good thread.

Bit of both for me - I have some orders already and others come along and ask availability.

I must also say now that Andy has said that I have had two gents ask to buy a male each from me and that does seem promising, but we will have to see as I also want a male to exchange for another bloodline.
